That must have been found under a building or in an attic. Really cool find. Snap a picture of the bottom and of the neck showing the seam line going up and post it. Perhaps include a little more story about how you found it? People like reading the story of the hunt and discovery. I know I do!

I picked this up at a yard sale today. It was pretty cheap so I decided to pick it up because it still had the labels. I'm not really into bottles, but I thought it was cool.

I think that you've got yourself a really cool collectable bottle! If you haven't already, read vpnavy's link. Here are pictures of the only hair bottle that I own:

That's a pretty sweet bottle! How did you get that one?

Hey qwer,

Welcome to the Bottle Department of TNet. I'm really into bottles & I think it's cool. 8-)

You might enjoy The New England Magazine: A Brief History of Danderine.

It has the Pure Food & Drug Act reference, and I wonder if that was due to the Company's experience at the hands of the newly created Food & Drug Police. It really is a tale of Bureaucrats Gone Berserk. It's a semi lengthy piece, but well worth the read from a bottle and Civics perspective: http://archive.nlm.nih.gov/fdanj/bitstream/123456789/37859/8/37000010.txt

"United States Department of Agriculture,
OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY.
NOTICE OF JUDGMENT NO. 284, FOOD AND DRUGS ACT.
ALLEGED MISBRANDING OF DANDERINE.
On or about June 17, 1908, in pursuance of a report made by the
Secretary of Agriculture to the United States Attorney for the North
ern District of West Virginia, there was filed in the District Court of
the United States for the said district a libel under section 10 of
the Food and Drugs Act of June 30, 1906, by which proceeding it
was sought to confiscate 65 casks of a liquid extract called "Dander
ine," for the reason that the product was misbranded in not having
a statement on the casks containing said product of the quantity or
proportion of alcohol contained therein. Upon the filing of said
libel and issuance of process the Knowlton Danderine Company
appeared and intervened as owner and resisted the confiscation.
The claimant waived trial by jury and the case was tried by the court
upon an agreed statement of facts, which is as follows:..."

This ad just says, "Take that you 7 Sutherland Sisters!" to me.

I got that bottle 10-12 years ago in a trade. Liked it because of it being hand blown and goes with my civil war relics.

I'll second that "Pretty Sweet Bottle," vote. It sure does go with Civil War stuff, even a little before.

"EMANEL THOMAS LYON: KATHAIRON FOR THE HAIR

Emanel Thomas Lyon was born in Germany in 1815 and immigrated to American. In the 1840s he would graduate from New Jersey's Princeton College and start working as a chemist in New York City. Sometime in the later 1840s he would start a drug manufacturing business located at 161 Broadway Street in New York City. He concocted several products. His primary product was his Magnetic Power which was for pest control. He also made his Essence of Jamaica Ginger and Kathairon for Hair. All three products were made before 1852. Another product he made was Lyon's Indian hair Dye. Below are photos of his Kathairon bottle. It is embossed Lyon's // Kathairon // For The Hair // New York and a add from the 161 Broadway address. There are five variants of this bottle. The bottle in the photos is the earliest of the five..." Bottle Pickers

Surf,

That is really good information to read & I thank you! I've now got more of a story to tell about this piece other than just, "I got it in a trade" Here are the side panels that you asked about.
