Back in the day,, all cast iron drainage pipes had poured joints. After caulking the joint with Oakum, melted lead was poured into the joint. Older homes had lead piping systems that delivered gas to the wall lamps used for lighting. Before we became aware of the health hazards of lead exposure, it was everywhere. Paint, toys, hemweights, and numerous household items. I remember the Welch Jelly glasses that had Flintstone Characters painted on them. It seemed that every household had a collection. The promotional gimmick was discontinued when it was made public that the paint used to portray Freddy, Bam Bam, and Wilma, had a lead base.
Yep,, still lots of lead around.
