Found in my backyard

I'm new to this hobby, and thought I'd give it a try in my own backyard, first. We found lots of junk - bolts, washers, etc., but also found a couple old pennies - a 1908 and a 1923 - and an old valve, of some sort.

cool! keep hunting in that yard. if you found stuff that old theres bound to be a silver coin somewhere. take your time and check flowerbeds and near spigot valves. anywhere people would work with their hands can result in dropped goodies. if you have a big tree back there check that area out too. kids give up coins when you turn them upside down!

I like the tap/ valve it looks old I'd say early 20th century.

That's some cool finds out of your back yard. Look under the kitchen window. In the days of old, the women would take their rings off and set them on the window sill to wash dishes. Alot of neat things can be found under the kitchen window. Keep em coming!

Did you check the back of your 1908 penny to see if there is a mint mark?? Nice finds!

Thanks everyone... we'll keep looking. As for a mint mark, I have no idea what I'm looking for. Here is a pic of the back of the 1908.

The mm is between the ribbons at the bottom on the reverse as you have it pictured.

Good finds! Try to figure out where an old clothesline would have been.

The valve is a gas lite valve the large end should be hafe inch to screw on the gassupply pipe
the small end had a tube with orifice that acted like a burner normally had a glass shade to cover the gas flame

Great job. Also look for the possible old clothesline. 1 thing i did in my yard was plant a test garden with all kinds of coins. Place em at different angles and different depths, have your friends try to id them also. Write down each item then you can test it out.
