Detector(s) used
Ace 250, Whites DFX, Minelab E-Trac, Minelab Excalibur II
So, I'm on vacation and we started out heading to West Virginia but we decided to stop at my fathers house south of Atlanta, Ga. Decided to swing the DFX since the house is turn of the century and the first coin out was a 1956 Rosie, then a couple of wheats a few toy cars and a lot of trash. With not much time left and it being way too hot I almost decided to call it quits but detected around the front of the house and out popped my first seated dime "1887" I literally screamed out loud "whooo hoooo" I'm so stoked I hope this is how the rest of my vacation is because I'll be detecting a lot in W Virginia. Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

Going to Parkersburg!

Happy dancing for you in New York - Congratulations!

Not always having pockets to keep money, people would drill holes in coins and thread through, string, rope, leather, whatever, and wear around their necks. Or sometimes sewed into areas of clothing to hide.
Or just way too much time on their hands.
Congrats on your first!

Wow!! What an awesome find!! Way to go!!

Congrats on your first - usually ones with little hole like yours - were sewn to inside of jacket or vest
a lotof pants did not have pockets or goodpockets in the 1800's - so they would sewn usually dimes or half dimes
to inside of vest or jacket and you would just snap it off when you needed it

Nice find!!!

Joe

from what i was told alot of the civil war soldiers would put a hole's in there coins and tie them to there uniforms so they would loose them and problably kept up the habit after the war..
