I called oldjerseygirl up and we went checking on our soybean fields. I'm trying to set it up where I can invite a bunch of people to hunt these fields with us. The fields are still in beans, so hopefully I'll get a call soon. We left there and went knocking on some doors. Finally got permission to do a very old house, late 1700's, early 1800's. I had that feeling it was probably a place that had been pounded by detectors in the past. My CTX managed to pull this tiny silver thimble out of its dirt nap. I got a 13-45 at seven inches. It was down easy eight or nine inches. The only mark on it is a 6. Another site I wish I could have been at in the 70's, I bet it was loaded with 1700's coins and relics!
Enjoy the pix

That's awesome. Silver thimble is up there on my wish list

Wow that's a real beauty bud. Really looks beautiful with those ugly old roofer hands in the background lol

That's a nice thimble brad, on my wish list!

Way to go

Nice thimble Brad. I haven't found one of any sort yet. What is the reason for the open end?

Nice one! The silver ones are hard to come by. I found my 10th thimble the other day, out if them only 2 are silver. HH!

While i was sewing yesterday i was using my thimbles. I prefer my open end one when i need to cut thread allot.

C'mon Dave, I'm a dirty filthy roofer like Abe said. I don't know why, i guess it's too cut thread? Ha lol

I thought maybe so you could still pick your nose! Lol

It is my third, one i found at a very historical site, that is brass. This one I'm glad i saved. I hate to think of these kind of things forever lost.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments

For blood letting? :laughing7: Actually it's a Tailor's thimble to allow the finger nail to be exposed or for circulation, the open top thimbles date back to the 16C.

Congrats on the silver open top thimble, not many silver ones are found.

That's a great find Brad! The open-ended variety are called tailor's thimbles. The thimbles used by early dressmakers usually had a closed top, but special thimbles with an open end were sometimes used by tailors as this design allowed them to manipulate the cloth more easily. It also provided for better air circulation during extended use. At one of the early 1700s sites Dan and I hunted last winter I dug 8 thimbles, and 2 of them were the open-ended type (see pics below). So you have a very cool and unique find, especially since its silver. Nice going!
