Found Old Button

Hi, got this in the woods with my Vanquish 540.

Seems like an old military uniform button.

What you think it might be?

Sherlock operated under several naming variations and partnerships but as “Sherlock & Co.” between c.1847 to c.1887 from premises at 15 King Street, Covent Garden in London. They certainly made military buttons, but also other uniform buttons.

I don’t recognise the monogram (they’re notoriously difficult to read) but it doesn’t correspond to any ‘regular’ military use that I’m aware of. In what region did you find this?

I actually found it in a forest on my small island nation. We were under British rule until we gained independence in the 1950s.

It’s fascinating to think that this button could have been dropped by someone from the colonial era, possibly around 150 years ago. Exploring history through these finds is truly exciting!

Nice find for sure. I have two Button books. 1 is record of American uniform and historical Buttons by Alphaeus H. Albert The other by Lillian Smith Albert. A Button Collector's Second Journal . I could find find no information on them for you .I am not real versed in how to properly use them. ,

The only “small island nations” that were Crown colonies in the Victorian era gaining independence from Britain in the 1950s were Singapore, plus Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and Labuan.

If it’s from one of those and relates to a ‘local’ entity it could be rather difficult to track down.

Note that there is no crown on the button, which makes it unlikely that it relates to any kind of British military or official institution.

It is a 2 or 3 piece button. When did they start making them. I have these two button books but am not sure how to completely use them. The one book has Albers home address in NJ labled in it . I should probably sell them

I took another closer look and you're absolutely correct. It is a British crown in the style used during Victoria's reign. I didn't see it at first. That's potentially going to make it easier to track down, so I'll put my thinking cap on

Thanks to @Gene Mean re-directing my thinking... it seems to be a Grenadier Guards button from the Victorian era. I hadn't noticed the 'grenade' below the monogram either.
