I'll be off-line for a while, spent last three days in ICU with a case of Necrotizing fasciitis. :BangHead: Started Weds as a slight swelling at the top of my buttocks and within 24 hours had become the size of a tennis ball. Went to a Med Express - they gave me prescription for antibiotic and sent me home. Went to hospital ER Sun morning and was rushed into surgery. They to remove a large section of the buttock to get all the infection and dead tissue out. I have no idea how I could have become infected so badly - possibly a spider bite, who knows. I can't sit for any length of time and it's going to take several weeks for this to heal. I'll be back on TNET once I get some strength back.

HH!

That's awful. Had a similar experience.

No surgery, but scared the bejeebers out of me.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Get back as quick as you can, and I'll promise not to let anyone make and half-a$$ jokes when you return. :laughing7:

Spiders don't carry flesh eating bacteria.

Spiders are in fact a common cause of necrotizing fasciitis.

The spider's toxin kills tissue surrounding the bite, and the dead tissue around the bite then provides an opportunistic location for bacteria which might otherwise be on the surface of the skin (some of which are aggressive and drug resistant these days).

Whether the spider "carries" the opportunistic organism is irrelevant.

Ummm,,
YES THEY DO,,,

As a matter of fact I have been bitten TWICE by Brown Recluse spiders.
Small raised,,very itchy bumps to start then when the enzymes multiply enough the tissue dies and turns into a very painful, nasty, smelly mass of PRE DIGESTED SPIDER FOOD.

This is what happens to an insect the spider usually bites. The insides are turned into mush so the spider can eat it.

Get well quickly! Stay out of the dirt until your wound has healed, as tough as that would be for all of us here! Sub 8-)

If you are near the ocean, it will help to soak in saltwater. It helped me.

Also a warning. The staph infection has probably spread throughout your entire body. This is what the doctors told me. I had to take tons of antibiotics to kill the recurring infection. Yes mine was recurring every year or so. I havent had any problems for years so I think I finally killed it.

However, my friend went into a coma and died from an untreated knee infection.

Does not sound like something I'd wish on anyone. Do what the Doc says and get well soon. Prayer on the way.

Recluse spiders are very small and they like to hide in folded clothes so its possible that one was in your pants. You will not feel the bite. I always shake my clothes out before putting them on especially pants that have been sitting folded for a long time.
