I'll be off-line for a while, spent last three days in ICU with a case of Necrotizing fasciitis. :BangHead: Started Weds as a slight swelling at the top of my buttocks and within 24 hours had become the size of a tennis ball. Went to a Med Express - they gave me prescription for antibiotic and sent me home. Went to hospital ER Sun morning and was rushed into surgery. They to remove a large section of the buttock to get all the infection and dead tissue out. I have no idea how I could have become infected so badly - possibly a spider bite, who knows. I can't sit for any length of time and it's going to take several weeks for this to heal. I'll be back on TNET once I get some strength back.

HH!

Necrotizing fascitis that heals that quickly means you were extremely lucky. If you get a fever go back to the hospital immediately, don't waste anytime, it could mean the difference between life and death. Personally, I think you should still be on the observation unit getting IV antibiotics.

If you are near the ocean, it will help to soak in saltwater. It helped me.

Also a warning. The staph infection has probably spread throughout your entire body. This is what the doctors told me. I had to take tons of antibiotics to kill the recurring infection. Yes mine was recurring every year or so. I havent had any problems for years so I think I finally killed it.

However, my friend went into a coma and died from an untreated knee infection.

This is actually a really bad idea. The ocean is very dirty. We have had recent death from sepsis due to different Vibrio bacteria in the Tampa Area. Vibrio is the genus of common bacteria that infect shellfish. Salt can help denude dead skin but best used in the bath tub with epsom salts. Necrotizing fascitis kills quickly. Sometimes survivors are worse off being alive. Saw a young girl lose all four limbs from going septic with it.

I am humbled and feel blessed to have all of you on my side. Thanks for all your well wishes. It is going to be a slow recovery and based on the amount of tissue loss, I have been extremely lucky to have caught this in time. The cause is still undetermined - Dr doesn't think this was due to a spider bite as the cultures did not indicate any unusual bacteria flora.
I have been monitoring body temp carefully as so far it has been within normal tolerances. The antibiotics and pain killers are working as well as can be expected. I owe a big word of thanks to my wife who has the task of changing the bandage and keeping my spirits up.
The good news is Dr has told me to do a lot of walking and no heavy lifting- and since I've got at least two weeks before I can return to work, I'm going to take advantage of this to get some detecting in, something I have not been able to do in several months.
You all have been great friends and I appreciate you all very much.

Seriously! You need to stay indoors and recover. Catch up on some movies. Your body is in a very fragile state. Don't expose yourself to anything from detecting. You are so lucky this was caught early. Don't be that person. Be smart, recover...hunt later. Believe me, please, I've seen what happens when people push things.

I'll take your advice Crispin- was not planning on getting out right away but maybe in a couple of weeks after first checkup.:occasion14:

Yea I hear that the water on the beaches is full of bacteria and I agree with you that it was bad advice. But it has always worked for me. The beach, the sun and the ocean water, even minnows picking on dead flesh, always seemed to work better for me than an epsom salt bath.. But Im not a doctor and our beaches are getting polluted even here in Florida so I agree with you. I didnt have Necrotizing fascitis either. Mine was just a bad Staph infection probably from a spider bite. And it left holes in my body but not the same as what is happening to Deepsecrets even though it took me years to finally get rid of it..

A little bit of sun is good for most people in general. Exercise is always a benefit. Seawater has a lot of beneficial properties...particularly the dead sea. However, the Gulf has a lot of turnover and a high detritus content. What really works well to help infections/sores heal is pool water. The chlorine kills all the bacteria and you get the same denuding properties from the ion gradient to help with sores.

Staph is bad...for sure. But it don't hold a candle to necrotizing fascitis. Nasty, nasty, nasty....I hope none of you ever know see it.
