Went to Long Beach, CA, around noon today for a couple of hours. I was scanning very slow with the ATX in a area of dry sand that has hard pack sand six inches under the soft sand. I have found older silver coins in this area in the past. It was HOT on the beach today. The thermometer said 77 degrees, But on the sand with no wind scooping deep, it felt like 90!!

Today I found a 1954 Roosevelt Dime & a very cool old Los Angeles Railway Token.

The Pacific Electric Red Car Railway system ran from 1902-1961. The Red Car system ran throughout LA & Orange County. The last run of the Red Car Line was in 1961 and ran from LA to Long Beach. I did some research on the token and it appears to be from around 1928.

The Red Car Line ran through Long Beach along the coast all the way to the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach. Seal Beach made a museum out of one Red Car (pictured below) along with other Red Car pictures, map of the Red Line Routes, and a video of the last Red Car running in 1961 from LA to Long Beach. I thought this was very cool because I grew up in Long Beach. I know of a couple areas where Red Line Stations were, so Maybe at some point, I will search for more history there.

I find it very interesting to find something, do research on the item, and see all the history behind it.

The Red Car video from 1961 is pretty cool watching all the 50's vehicles running around

Thanks for coming by........

Very cool thanks for sharing

Hey Bill... Cool finds!:hello2::hello2::hello2:

I got some more recent transit tokens but nothing that old yet. Pretty outstanding to be regularly pulling out silver coins. Mine have all come in drips and drabs.

The 'ol knees are healing up nicely..perhaps I'm not as old as I thought.

You never know what info you will turn up doing research! Could be just the hot spot your looking for! Congrats on your finds!

So-cal-beachscanner, thanx for the report. How are you liking your ATX so far? Few questions for you: a) Was this the first time you tried it out in that particular dry sand zone where you'd suspected more silver coins lurked? b) How deep was the silver dime and the token ? c) was there a lot of clad too? d) junk ratio? e) nails ? Or were you angling at nixing them out via the iron-check, or sounds, etc....?

Nice find on the silver and the token. I love the history on finds like these.

WoW ! that's really something. Tks

SoCalBeachScanner,

Awesome finds, congrats on finding those old goodies. I have found a token as well but in far worse condition. Looks like that ATX will pay for itself in no time! :hello2:

Thanks Joe,

Good to hear your knees are feeling better. I know which token you are talking about (photo below). I've found about twelve of those so far.
I hit the downtown area this morning, no silver, just lots of clad and a funky ring that has a "K" inside which is all you can read. It didn't test for 14k.

Great saves.
Nice to see the finder (SCBS) also putting in the research time then presenting 'the package' of the find pic and its history.
Don.

Hi Tom,

I like the ATX more and more each time I use it. I run it wide open (no discrimination and sensitivity all the way up) and it behaves very well cranked all the way up with a good Ground Balance and a slight hum on the Threshold. Repeatable signals are almost as good as my AT Pro, just a little more lingering in sound, and the PinPoint on the machine is dead on. I haven't played with the Non-Motion Mode yet, next time out I will, they say it scans deeper in Non-Motion Mode, so we'll see.

I'm getting where I can judge the depth of the item with the Signal Strength Indicator (SSI). The SSI has 13 LED's and I look for a deep signal while hearing it that is between 1-2 out of 13 LED's. It's either something very small toward the surface which is eliminated after the first swing or two of the scoop. If it's still there, I keep digging, and if the signal stays the same low signal, this it good for something deep. Most items close to the surface have strong signals of 6 LED's or more. The first thing I do is hit the Iron Check on strong signals and it sounds on most iron close to the surface. So I figure it will save me scooping iron about 50% of the time.

I should bring a tape with me to measure the depth. If I had to guess, the token & dime were between 10-12 inches. And yes, I was getting some clad in the top 6-7 inches, and I thought I cleaned out the surface clad in that area with the AT Pro. I was getting deep iron i.e., chunks of cast iron, steel, ball bearing, bits of rusted steel cans, couple of screws & nails. For every piece of iron I scooped, I usually scooped at least one clad of something. Even though I used the Iron Check, I scoop everything just to see what it was vs the signal strength to get use to the machine.
That was the second time I worked that area where I have found silver in the past. The first time with the ATX in that area I found a Buffalo Nickel & a Mercury Dime, after scooping about 30 deep and shallow holes. No wheat pennies yet for some reason, just recent pennies in the upper layer.

If I go out more then two hours with that heavy beast, I will use the sling that came with the machine. Maybe I should start swinging by changing arms occasionally or I will have one Popeye arm a one and olive oil arm :)

PS

I will find a gold coin at Long Beach before next summer, I'm expecting it! :)
It will take a few years to catch up with you in the gold coin count, unless I find a pocket spill of them.

Thanks RG,
I remember putting pennies on the track when I was 6 or 7 so the Red Car would flatten it. The Long Beach Line ran about 7 blocks from where I grew up. That was a big mistake getting rid of the trolly and most of the tracks in favor of buses.

Nice post...Love that Red Car token. There has been talk about bringing the red car back in some selected areas.

Thanks Rich,
Have you hit the beach down this way lately?

004.webp005.webp006.webp Funny you should ask...I hit Manhattan this morning, no luck, nada. It's 11:00 am, goin' to Long Beach, thinkin' about some of your recent posts :) It's my second time visiting your hood. So low tide at 1:30 pm I'm working the mucky clay from 19th to 3rd. Fishing weights, cell phone, clad and that's it. Spent about three hrs. Btw my in-laws loved the story re: Red Car...Their in there 90's and grew up in LA riding the RC...very cool.
