Cool find! What does the side of the shank look like? I'm sure one of the experts will come along and ID it right off the bat but I'm just curious.

British 64th Regiment of Foot button. Very cool find! That unit was active from 1756 to 1881 and participated in the Siege of Boston during the Revolutionary War as well as the Philadelphia Campaign. What state did you find the button in?

I believe it is a reencator's button taken from the original British 64th regiment. The back is all wrong for an 18th century button and the design on the face is more modern the way the device has been cut into the original mold.

Thanks for the info. That's interesting. This site is in Rochester NY. I have found a lot of old military buttons here. This one still has the gilt on the front although it isn't real bright. The back has no gilt at all. I added better pics of the back if that helps. It was found about 2" down.

That's an interesting take on it. That might be so. I have no idea. I know a lot of reproductions are made from aluminum or other light weight metals. This one is heavy. Maybe the 2 new pics I added will shed more light on its authenticity.

Yep, most definitely a modern reproduction. Obvious even without seeing the back.
