More than likely a very toasted LC or a knock out for a box. I would try some hot water to get it off then if you can tell it's a coin I would use either vegetable oil or peroxide to get some of the crud off.
 

Approx 30 millimeters wide, and wieghs 7.7 grams. Much less than a half dollar but width is close. Also ferrous

And I would agree about the electrical knockout, but this thing is way thinner than the knockouts I see on jobsites. Still a possibility. Fixin to get the sandpaper out lol

IMO That's not great news but hope you got some Detail off the piece.
