That not erosion on the edges. It take a trained eye. It's old symbols . The noticeable please on it means priest. It's found on most of their work. There are book on old sign and symbols that will help you learn to recognize them. I would show you mine but I loaned it out. When I get it back I will send a picture of it. It covers most known symbols.
