Probably had to be a cabin near by then? look for a depression in the ground nearby. Nice surprise find.

There must have been a Cabin close by - probably within 100 ft. or less.
I'd bring a Machete and a small coil if you have one.
IMPORTANT - Look out for the old Well - they can be easy to fall into - game over !

Good Luck !

Nice looks old. Detect around it for sure. If your daring dig up the privy. May be bottles and other goodies down there.

Work your way forward from the door of the outhouse to find the housesite.

Watch out for wells and old outhouse spots. When an outhouse hole got full they would just move it.

Some of those aren't as old as they appear to be. I see what appears to be plywood meaning it might be too new to dig in. Good luck.

Dig in or dig around? Careful, there may be a hole under there.

Never dig a plywood privy!

Have any of you dug or metal detect in old out house holes have you ever found anything in them if you have??I found an old church site were the coins Im finding are from 1830 to 1900. it looks like there may be 3 old out house holes i just detected around.Never thought about detecting in the holes. The church is long gone.

bleh, looks kinda snakey and spidery to me

I agree, never dig a plywood privy....there is just a bunch of new crap in them :laughing7:

Old outhouse? An old school bus stop...
Maybe you could find out what the diet was back then... :). There's bound to be stuff in the ground there...look forward to seeing your finds!
All you have to do is dig a scoop of dirt near that structure and if it was an outhouse you will know it.
