I live in western Indiana. Almost straight west of Indianapolis. Seven miles from the Illinois border. I detected a new permission field yesterday. The field sits above a roaring creek. It's mostly flat, but has a few tall moundlike high spots. I don't get the feeling they are Burial Mounds. Maybe just little hills. I was looking for a couple old homesites that an old map showed and had some success in finding those. But the high point of the day was the walk back to the truck. I decided to walk over the top of one of the hills and saw a portion of this point exposed. Maybe an inch. I spent my youth combing the fields for points so naturally I flipped it up. What's odd is that 95 percent of the field is clay with hardly a pebble. No flint flakes of any kind period. Just a couple areas with lots of 1800 glass which is the reason I was there. Well it's the largest whole point I've ever found. I was wondering if any of you artifact guru's on here could give me any info on the type of point and possible age before I do some internet research. That's why I included my area. Thanks! I'll post some more pics and a short video if I can get it to download. This one's got me curious. Good Hunting! 165973113_463709651557484_1850661115967204744_n.jpg point.jpg

One would say Madison except it is much too large. Almost looks as though it was a larger point/knife that broke and was rechipped. Someone more familiar with your area will chime in. Nice find.

Being an Artifact Collector and Metal Detectorist, I to have found artifacts while detecting. I enjoyed your story on how this Triangle artifact was found. Congrats on a nice rescue!

If I found it, I'd call it a Decatur Blade or Preform.

Can you show additional images, close up of the blade please. Include a profile image and other perspective images please.

It is beveled at all or have any grinding on the edges?

first impressions is it is a knife preform. Don't know if I would agree its a Decatur preform, but it could be.

That is an amazing field peice, do to the fact the size and the condition. I would keep my eye out in that field. I always wanted to do some detecting and look at the same time, however both deserves concentration to be successful.

My buddy has a large quartz triangle with a tassel con cavity. Not a straight base as yours has. However, that is a large intact specimen. If that was missed I'm sure your at a terrific field and not far from more.

Also, you mentioned one of the hills. I'm not an expert, but in my humble opinion the the upper third slope to the top of a hill in a field is prime.

Thanks for the pic

That looks like a good fit to me.

Thanks for all the replies! I have never tried very hard to identify blade types. I think I'll start by trying to identify the points I have. I think its fascinating how many types of blades there are and the timeframes they fall under. Truly a testament to the incredible ingenious complexity of the human race, both past and present!

I am not sure it is not a re worked tip. The sides have work on both sides yet the base is all knapped on way. What ever it is it is a nice one.
