Oh yea, the center is loose, like separate from the rest....I thought maybe from an oil lamp, but was told otherwise.

I was going through my junk and this is the lantern or lamp part that reminded me of your what is it. I took the pics with my cell so please excuse the quility. I alse ran across found a silver chain, a 1899 IH penny, and a unmarked 1st Lieutenant silver bar, and a small fake bullet that unscrews.

Hope this brings some life back to this topic:

Well to keep it going it surely isn't a vehicle cooling system thermotat. Because you see the wax cylinder on the thermostats are marked with their temperaturee rating. For comparison these two thermostats (1995 Jeep and a 1992 GMC van) have the temperature rating clearly visible on the cylinder:

You are posting pictures of modern style thermostats. The old ones are not all marked. But I agree it certainly not a modern thermostat and may not be an old thermostat or part of one either. Its just a guess. Maybe try to find a better matching pic of an oil lamp because I just dont see it.

I know that my fellow will be impressed w/ the Tnet chatter over his find.. thanks again guys.

Just for fun:

Thanks for posting more pics but I still dont see it. There are no collar threads to attach to the body, no way to attach a globe and no wick adjuster. There isnt even a center hole for the wick so I dont see how it can be an oil lamp burner.
