Greetings. I've been lurking here for a few weeks and decided that I should finally introduce myself. My father introduced me to MDing when I was younger, we would hunt farm fields around Antietam and Harpers Ferry. Found a few coins, bullets and mini balls, but eventually lost interest as a teen. Flash forward to a few weeks ago when I met our neighbor the cache hunter and after a few stories he has renewed my interest in TH and MDing. We went under the family farmhouse last weekend to dig around the fireplaces. The house was built in 1829 and has been through three families. Found a pottery marble (?) and a broken plate that looks like it was used to cook. Both were about eight inched under the soil. Also found eleven metal coffee cans filled with glass marbles inside under a stairwell. There's two other fireplaces that we are hoping to get to before it gets to warm, but we have to dig out way over to that end of the house.

Great looking old spot you found there. Can't wait to see more of your finds.

judging by the type of coffee cans used to store the marbles, I would guess it was some kid's marble collection from the 1950's - 60's era?

I think you're in for a pleasant surprise at what some of those marbles will be worth. I just Googled the term "marble collecting" ( including the quotation marks ) and got over 1,300 hits. Watch for the name, Everett Grist. I have 2 books that he published about identifing those cuties and their approx. values. Those books have color photos of each example. Good luck, congratulations, and welcome to the forum.

Maybe you should Google "can collecting" , too. ;D

type Marvelous Marbles into your search bar i just went to that site you'll find it worth your time some of your marbles might be worth anywhere from $40-$2000 ... might just be a mini fortune you found wtg

Thanks for the links and words of encouragement guys. I looked up a few sites mentioned to get an idea what I have. A good many of the marbles appear to be made by the same two companies (Peltier & Akro Agate) with a lot of odd balls in there as well. Found a few clay ones and I still have four cans to clean and go through. If it rains this weekend I know my plans. :)

The cemetary is awesome too. Those old ones have a headstone and a foot stone. From what I've seen of some, the person was buried in back of the headstone and the footstone was laid behind that. Thanks for the pics.

Great finds, McGarnacle! A cache of marbles is still a cache, and a pretty good one, too.

Is your name a reference to "The Critic?" If it is, I got some new partners for ya! A tyrannosaurus, a cute little kid, a smelly old dog...

Nice collection of marbles, some of them are bound to be worth some bucks.
Those old ones are very collectable.

Don't underestimate the value of those cans! In good shape like those, people collect them too....

Great finds. There is one marble in the small can that catches my eye. Near the top edge. Could be an Oxblood on Blue. They are very good. Be very careful not get ripped off. HH,Catsman
