Frames #5 & #6 of Grandpa's artifacts

These two frames have some really neat pieces. Frame #5 has a pipe bowl in it. It looks like it has seams so I am assuming its a trade piece(?). Also in this frame, above the bowl of pipe, is an odd shaped artifact(#39). Does anyone know anything about what this could have been? There are lots of little bird points on here and #19 is another odd shaped piece.

Frame #6 has a cool point(#31)--is this a spear point or blade? I tried to take a closeup of it. It has some beautiful flaking and a raised ridge on one side. Are the drills like #9 on this frame, reworked Daltons? There is another smaller piece that had come loose off this second frame and looks like it started out as a Dalton(?) but is rounded off on the tip. Is it maybe a scraper? I took a closeup of it, too.

This has been great fun for mom and I to share these with everyone! Thanks for looking and all the comments on the previous posts! Kind regards, sandcreek4

Hi greg-rocks--Yes, everything in Grandpa's collection were personal finds of his and my mom's. But he hunted for artifacts for 30 some years and accumulated quite a bit. This was just a small portion of the collection that I posted. My mom gave 1/2 the artifact collection to aunt/cousins when grandpa passed away. There were lots of broken pieces and nutting stones, too. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing some of his artifacts and thank you for the comments!! Kind regards, sandcreek4

greg-rocks--he never bought anything either. Someone gave him two points one time and he thanked them, but later gave the points to a friend. He just wanted what he had personally found. He set up his artifacts at a small show one time and some man commented that grandpa had one of the "purest" collections that he had ever seen. His greatest joy was showing these things and he never would have guessed that someday people from all across the country would see them !
But I'm not knocking anyone who buys points either especially if you want to own a Clovis or some other piece that you can't find in your part of the country. Everybody collects differently, and that's what makes each collection unique! Regards, sandcreek4

Cool collection, Sandcreek! #39 caught my attention, too. It almost looks like it could have been mounted. Gravers were used on anything you wanted to engrave. Pottery, bone, arrowshafts, your girlfriend's lower back....tattoos were big in the old days. Great points!

I tend to feel the same way greg-rocks. Personally found collections offer a substantial amount of interesting archaeological information pertaining to a certain area or region . Collections like sandcreek’s can provide information concerning what cultures were present in a specific region for the past 11,000 plus years. Also, a collection like this will provide you with statistics concerning what the primary local lithic sources were and what sources would be considered exotic for the particular region.

I have been fortunate to have had the privilege to look at a number of personally found collections from your part of the country sandcreek. Judging from what I see in your grandfather’s collection I can tell he loved to hunt artifacts and he was a very serious hunter ...I would have liked to have met him.

I agree with the above post thought it is so hard .My artifact collection is also clean with all the points being found by me,,,,,but I did buy a beautiful Aztec fertility bowl from a collection I knew .Of course its way diff than my local found pottery. I have hunted diff places but my local is all within 50 miles of Chattanooga. There are huge local collections whole rooms to the brim in this area. I love Sandcreeks Grandfathers finds. I keep coming back to see(sandcreeks) them you will learn more of a particular culture and daily life with what she is showing. In my humble opinion.

Thank you so much for the kind words 11KBP! Grandpa was a great man and along with every artifact had a story to tell about where he found it. One story I remember: He was arrowhead hunting after a huge spring rain and he just knew the gravel bars were "turned over". He was walking along and looked over into the creek bank and saw the outline of a "dinosaur"(as he called it). He said most of the bones were there and you could see where the indians had started a fire in(on) it to cook it, because there was a huge black burnt spot right in the middle of the thing! I remember being awed by that story. I don't know if he found any artifacts that day but how cool would that have been to see that??? and get an in-situ of something like that??? He didn't bring any bones home, though :( , I guess he just wasn't interested in stuff like that.
I wish he was still here to show me all he knew! And I think he would have enjoyed meeting you and others on here, too! He would have been amazed at the knowledge on here!
THANKS 11KBP AND TnMountains for all the comments and I'm so glad you enjoyed Grandpa's collection!
Kind Regards~~~sandcreek4
