People who Treasure Hunt with a metal detector often also go magnet fishing. Big powerful magnets are DESIRABLE but can be expensive, hard to remove from massive objects and easily lost. Microwave ovens use a generator called a KLYSTRON TUBE. These contain rare earth magnets that are useful. Get an old defunct Microwave oven, remove the Klystron and CAREFULLY disassemble it to harvest the magnets. Magnets can also be attached to shorter pieceS of PARACORD and run across the surface/ground to pick up ferrous metals much like people do when MUDLARKING do.

What do the magnets look like, or what is their shape?
 

If you are going to tear apart a microwave, make sure the high voltage capacitor is fully discharged first...
 

You forgot to mention.

Most magnetrons have beryllium oxide (beryllia) ceramic insulators, which are dangerous if crushed and inhaled, or otherwise ingested. Single or chronic exposure can lead to berylliosis, an incurable lung condition. In addition, beryllia is listed as a confirmed human carcinogen by the IARC; therefore, broken ceramic insulators or magnetrons should not be directly handled.

All magnetrons contain a small amount of thorium mixed with tungsten in their filament. While this is a radioactive metal, the risk of cancer is low as it never gets airborne in normal usage. Only if the filament is taken out of the magnetron, finely crushed, and inhaled can it pose a health hazard

Thank you for the added caution ! You are spot-on about the caution. I work CAREFULLY when disassembling a KLYSTRON doing it outside where there is a bit of a breeze. You are also correct calling these generator tubes MAGNETRONS. I always thought of KLYSTRONS and MAGNETRONS as being slightly different . MAGNETRONS used to have VERY LARGE EXTERNAL MAGNETS that had the tube slipped between pole pieces ( attached PIX ). KLYSTRONS have the magnets part of and internal to the tube. One of my attached PIX shows the ~2.5 inch diameter magnet that came from a KLYSTRON. The big blue external magnet comes from a 1950's military surplus radar magnetron. I used a similar magnet to demonstrate the paramagnetic properties of liquid oxygen. Truly BIG MAGNETRON MAGNETS can be also used to alter the paths of moving charged particles in mass analyzers/spectrometers and particle accelerator beams. Sorry for the depth; taught college quantum physics looooong time ago. All the same; charged particles in motion generate an e/m field. In the absence of an external reference field this Landau Quantization is a moot point ( unless you are concerned with esoteric quantum entanglements ). Particles in a reference field loose their degeneracy and the the interaction produces a torque that alters the particle path ( PIX ) and causes the particles to radiate energy. In a MICROWAVE OVEN, the radiative frequency is the same as the vibrational frequency for Water. Energy is transfered by the coupling which quickly gives you a hot cup of coffee. I just posted again. Donught shape about 2.5 inches diameter half inch thick. Fragile easily broken be careful. Also be careful about dangerous materials used in KLYSTRON manufacture. Microwave ovens also contain HIGH VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS thst I use for TESLA COILS and PARTICLE ACCELERATORS.

What are the size if the magnets and how strong?
Wihout going outside and actually measuring one,I,d say about 4 inch diameter and 3/4 inch thick. Strong enough to pinch your finger if you get it in between two of them.Got a hole about 3/4 inch diameter right in the middle. Fits right over a 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch PVC pipe,line up as many as you want and it makes a pretty good fishing magnet but put a 1/2 inch iron pipe inside so the PVC doesn,t break if you snag something heavy.
