FUGIO CENT! Ok folks. A bucket lister I didn’t know even existed and some advice needed

I rescued a FUGIO CENT yesterday at my uncles permission in Winchester CT. The pictures should some crud covering the front and back and I’m not sure I should mess with it anymore. Any opinions? I scraped off enough on the obverse to see the word FUGIO. we’re thrilled with this find as we never new they existed till now

Congrats on the save, an amazing piece of history.
It's a hard one to say if going any further in taking the layer of crud off would just diminish what details there were on the coin.
The detail left where you have already taken the crust off is readable -but what would be under the thicker crud could be lost.
I have to say this one would be a hard call if I had dug it, best of luck.

Seems like a harsh way to go if one doesn't exactly know what they're doing.

You do pretty much ANYTHING to that , and you will have a smooth disc..

That is a beautiful coin and a great little piece of history! If it was me, I would not attempt any further cleaning. You would risk wrecking it...and I speak from experience. If you can ID the coin ( and you can), then you're all set! Congrats!

Congrats on a rare find !

Looks like a lot of detail could fall off that coin very easily !
Just my opinion but ... your coin is not a good candidate for Electrolysis at all - you'd probably wipe it slick.
If it was mine I'd probably put it in a Coin Flip the way it is now or maybe soak it in Olive Oil for a week or two and gently clean with a wooden Tooth Pick or possibly try using "Andre Pencils" on it.

It's up to you but if you do decide to clean in any way ... there's no going back !

Great find. Don't try to clean it up anymore. You'll just make it worse.

That's super awesome! I stumbled upon learning about the Fugio coppers last year while looking something else up in my coin book. I have wanted one ever since. Hoooo doggies! they are pricey at the coin shop! If it were me, I would have broken it somehow already. Leave it. Put it in a nice little coin keeper and admire it and show it off. It's not going to be worth a whole lot in it's condition, but you have one of "the first coins issued by authority of the United States," and that's huge in my opinion.

thanks some good news and developments On the obverse side the crud tends to flake off when I drop the coin on my granite countertop I don't scrape it. 9 of the 13 rings are now clearly visible. I'm headed to a local coin dealer today for his opinion also He is excited to see it

I dug this in Canada, and didn't know what it was. Soaked in hot peroxide and picked away. When no more came off, I soaked in olive oil and picked away at it.

I have had good luck cleaning problem coins with a soft brass bristle brush the size of a tooth brush from Freight Harbor Supply. Wet brushing with water and a little dish soap in the sprayer is best. Most of the coins I find are not valued enough to worry. At least they look their best for display. That's all I care about. Something really rare and possibly valuable I would send it to a professional.

I do the same thing, as far as using the brass bristle brush. ONLY ON CLAD of course. I haven’t found anything valuable as far as coins go, except for a single wheat cent, but if I even think I have something older, I would want another opinion first.
