Fun with airtesting . . . with pictures!

Disclaimer: As you know, airtests really don't mean much . . .

This was just for fun and I wanted to pass it along. There was no science behind it - so please don't knock me around! I just wanted to have a little time with my toys and it's too darn cold to go outside. I decided to take out my detectors and have a little contest on a clad dime. I did this in my kitchen so, obviously there is metal and all kinds of EMI - but I did the best I could considering. Kind of interesting that they all got pretty close results. I used headphones and depth was the farthest repeatable faint signal.

I tried to use my typical hunting setups:

Tejon - Sens. 10, Disc Just below foil
Deleon - Sens. 10, Disc Just below foil
1266 - Sens. 3/4 max, Disc 2
F75 - Sens. 80, JE mode, Disc 9
DFX - Coin preset mode, AC - 80, Preamp 3
Jenco - max volume, max sensitivity!


So anyway - if anyone else is bored - do this and post the results! Just for kicks,

Thats quite an arsenal you have there Saginian. As far as depth goes, me - I quit diggin at 10 inches anyhow, on a coin signal.

maybe you can figure a dime with cibola? according to the tech support i talked to from tesoro they said i can pick up a quater with my stock coil at 17 inches.. which by the way isn not bad at all

I'm going to buy me one of those cibolas and a backhoe, LOL.

17 inches on a quarter?? I need to get a Cibola! Dan - you know the issue with my DFX (have to get the coil fixed) so that's why I think it's a little lower than what it should be.

I like the DFX and dug 1500 coins with it in 2008, but nothing deeper than 6", and missed alot of oldies.

1500 is a lot of diggin! How do you know you missed oldies? From my experience with it goes pretty deep - quite abit deeper than 6". I know what you mean though, any target that's more than 10 deep is too much work! Usually, those are just large Iron at 2 ft deep that sound like coins.

O.K. ,Ian...heres my results...(set up as I would hunt...repeatable signal)

Radio Shack, Discovery 1000..............4.25" (saved this one for the kids)

Whites, IDX Classic............................8.25" (my baby)

Minelab, X-cal 1000...........................9.25" (Reads a Ford Explorer at 8ft!)

And just for S+Gs ...IDX vs clean LC.......9.25"
Thought it would read deeper...dont know if a "dirty aura" reads deeper??

What am I doing wrong? set up on the pool table in the man hole (my basement) Here's my results:

Bounty Hunter Tracker IV: All metal, Max sens. 4 - 1/2 " dime flat to coil

Prizm IV Sens max, Disc Tab, dime flat to coil 6- 1/2 " actual...meter reading 8+ "

Tesoro Cortez: Sens 10, Disc btwn Iron & Foil, dime flat to coil 7-1/4 to 7-1/2

I was using headphones (jolly rogers)

Nice Nice!! I wanted to see some other tests! Thanks guys! radiemaker - you might not be doing anything wrong, maybe I did? Oh, I know what you might want to check out on that Cortez - when I said 10 on my Deleon - actually it was above 10 - like in the red. For me, that gives me much better depth. I was moving the dime flat to the coil quickly back and forth and getting a very slight repeatable signal at those distances. I'm sure a margin of error (+)(-) 1" on each just getting the mark on the paper. Jopher, that IDX is smoking! Isn't that what you found the large cent with? I think you are right, dug coins do a little better I think. Well, there's no telling how our interference in the house affects the results - probably this is totally useless - but if nothing else, it gets us thinking about detecting, right? By the way, I think it's supposed to be -20 degrees(windchill) here later this week

One other note about my tests - the F75 was verging on unstable at those settings - as was the 1266. The Tejon, Deleon, and DFX were as smooth as silk. Go figure,

Hey Planet, I was thinking of ordering the clean sweep too. I live near a large sports park, soccer , baseball, football ect. Usually good for a couple bucks in clad (Battery money) and a few suprises. I think this coil would really speed up coverage time. Also, one of those traveling carnivals visits each year in early summer. It's easy to see the traffic areas when they've packed up an gone

Had the DFX cranked up max, don't think i ever saw a depth reading over 6". Hunting with a friend, he would locate a solid target around that depth and the DFX would chirp but sometimes nothing at all. I don't believe it's a defective unit as it was brand new, (had to return the first one as it would not ground balance at all), and that manual ground balance feature is still annoying as all get-out! FFD

Thats why i got a cibola from tesoro.. i didnt have to worry about ground balancing, if i lived in the south i would of gotten a manuel balance since i read about red clay and harder soil... michigan is considered the 2nd largest wet lands, alaska is number one, i wish i could remeber where i read this becuse it was a good report on michigan soil... i wanted to post it here but i never did last year now i cant find it.... i did get a copy of michigans geological report where it shows mineral deposits and wet land areas...its a good tool to know..
