Not to say it isnt ,but most fuze use a keyed wrench of some sorts so it would sit flush inside the ball so if there was some sort of a cap or plug i think that it would use some sort of keyed wrench . What ever it is it sure looks as if it was on and off quite a few times with different wrenches. Sorry I couldn't help you. The threads seem the same , but not sure of the piece on the inside of the cap and it seems to go in at the top . I just thought that if it were a artillery piece it would be more solid , not so hollow inside??

It looks like an old school coolant drain plug from an engine block.

It looks like a drain plug to something. It looks like a pipe wrench has been used on the top

Interesting that something like this would be out in the middle of the woods at a cw camp.. There was hardly any modern stuff found.. This is just so odd to me

It's possible it is civil war. Had the woods been logged out years ago or anything? If so it may have come from that. I don't know what it is but I would keep it.

Drain plugs, Tractor parts, plow pieces, scythe handle ferrules. These can end up in any old site randomly, since they are farming-related.

You detect long enough, you come to realize that just about anything can be found just about anywhere.

As others said, it may not have always been woods. We hunt a patch of woods we call the "Power woods" because it is near the electric company offices. I was stunned to see aerial photos of the area from 1949. It was a farm field then. I also know from historical records that the area was devoid of trees after the civil war as every stick of wood had been used for fortifications or fires.

Your item may have fallen of a tractor... :dontknow:

And.....it was installed with a copper crush gasket under the rim. You can almost see the evidence of that on the flat edge in his first pic.
