I found this GAR button in the "jungles" of Vicksburg, MS.
It is very decorative.
The front features Lady Liberty flanked by a Union infantryman and Union sailor with a mother between them embracing a child who appears elated that his father is home safe from the war. Around the rim it says: Grand Army of the Republic 1861-1866.
Since the war ended in 1865, I'm guessing 1866 is when the last of the volunteers musketered out (?)

The back of the button features a campfire with a kettle on an open flame and what appears to be a bedroll (?)

Very interesting button. Probably lost by a Union veteran visiting the battlefield or returned to live in Vicksburg. GAR01.webpGAR02.webp

Great find. Nice work on that. The condition is much better than most buttons around here.

I was very pleased that it cleaned up so well. Just soap and water and a touch of ammonia and she cleaned right up. The soil on those hills in Vicksburg is loess and is generally pretty kind to metal, especially brass. Thanks for commenting.

That's a cool find

Nice find on the lapel pin.

Very nice find on the GAR lapel pin. Great shape. This will display well. Another piece of our American History saved.
