I have been going to share this for years but have not got around to it.
In 2008 my father in law went on vacation.
He ask me to water his garden while he was gone.
I went over turned the water on and waited.
I happened to look down and in the row I was watering I saw something shiny.
Picking it up I realized it was an 1892 5 d gold half eagle .
To make long story short with a metal detector I have now found 48 5 d half eagles all dated 1880-1899
And 1 Indian head 2.5 dollar.
The pictures show some of my find.
It also shows other coins found as well

Stunning finds! Did you ever tell your FIL? Haha:laughing7:

With someone finding 48 $5 gold coins, I'm astounded there aren't more replies and calls for a banner find. How do you vote for banner? If I could figure out how, I would vote it!

That is absolutely incredible!
I bet you’re happy you watered the garden that day. How large was the area you found them?
To find one is very rare, but to find 48 plus a gold $2.50 is astonishing.
You think they were buried there on purpose or lost over time?

I think by the dates on the coins that it all was buried when president Roosevelt called in all gold.
On April 5, 1933, Roosevelt ordered all gold coins and gold certificates in denominations of more than $100 turned in for other money. It required all persons to deliver all gold coin, gold bullion and gold certificates owned by them to the Federal Reserve by May 1 for the set price of $20.67 per ounce.
I think whoever buried the coins though that no one was going to get his gold.

They were all found in about 50’ of each other.
I think the tiller my father in law used dug them up.
A couple had nicks in them.

Cool story, thanks for sharing this incredible story of the gold recoveries. :occasion14:
Just seeing 20 in the photo, did you do a split 50/50 with your FIL?

Yes I split them with my father in law
Also gave 1 to each of my children.
The plan is to give 1 to each of my grandkids when they are old enough to appreciate it.

Did you search the rest of the yard? If someone buried one cache, then maybe there are more. If that were my yard, it would be dug lot line to lot line! :3coins::3coins::3coins::3coins::3coins:
