Detector(s) used
White's Coinmaster GT, Tesoro Vaquero, Tesoro Cibola, HF9F Metal Detector.
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
Okay, I was first deciding on a Tesoro Vaquero for purchase knowing it is an all around deep hitter, however I want to hunt the beach sometimes and know that it is not a wise choice for that. So I decided to dig a little in my pocket deeper and was looking at the Fisher F5. Heard it was not good as good on Depth as the Vaquero. SOOOOO..... I decided to dig in my pocket just a hair bit deeper and was looking at purchasing the AT Pro seeing as it is submersible up to 10 feet. Imagine the SHOCK I get when I see a few videos and it air tests no deeper than 6-8" on a Quarter with it's big A$$ coil. Needless to say I was MAD because I really wanted this detector bad. Then I see another video where it is air testing around a foot on a Quarter. So were the previous air tests just user error not knowing how to set it up properly? Someone chime in because before I purchase this thing I HAVE to know the depth will be comparable to the Vaquero.

Ive never air tested mine but I can tell you I have found coins at 8-10 inches...Maybe the 1st video you watched is they had it in standard mode & the 2nd video was in pro mode ....anyways if you are thinking about the detector Ill give it a thumbs up & to add the main reason I bought it was the fact that I can hunt rain or shine....This is huge to me as I can only hunt on weekends mostly & if its raining I can still hunt as others will be sitting in car waiting for the rain clear up!

Thanks for the reply kayden. Do you know how it does at the ocean with the saltwater?

No I never had it at the ocean...but in the Garrett forum I believe they talk about it...I think if I remember right they had to really lower the sensitivity down

dirtfisher all these machines would certainly be within an inch of each other on a real silver quarter, assuming same coil size and type. It is impossible to answer your question because we dont know what videos of air tests you saw.

The one I saw that did well was one on youtube that said AT Pro vs GTI 2500. I will see if I can find both and post them here in a little bit.

Here is the one with the good air test :

Here is the one that says Garrett themselves say it suppose to only get 6-8" depth on a Quarter:

So my question is...... Which one is it? lol :icon_scratch:

I have a AT Pro and live near the beach in Fla. I use mine in the water, sand and dry land. Got it after they first cane out and love it.
I can say it has found items on dry land deeper than I expected, I got a 1914 license plate that was about 12 inches down.

The beach is a little tricky you need to make sure you ground balance when the soil changed ie dry sand, wet sand and salt water.
I have never stuck min fully underwater so not sure what to tell you there but have been slapped around by waves enough.

Hope this helps.

In answer to your question, I have an AT Pro and use it on beaches...Works great...

Coins though, are usually FUBARED...

Jewelry, recently lost, fares best. The sand and wave action is not friendly.

Best finds are where people set up camp or set things down to be loaded into cars...

This machine is really hot on quarters and other coins. I found a quarter that was really deep. I kept digging but thought I was getting a false signel then pulled out a quarter.

The fact that both machines are on, in a house, right next to each raises red flags. It almost made me spill my drink. Any decent tecter will chatter like a banshee in the house with max sense, even more so sitting next to another different tecter set at max sense. Air test tecters outside, with the machine gb'd, and put the target on top of clean ground, no trash within two foot radius minimum. Set the tecters max sense, zero scrim, we want to see which one is deepest. Stick a wooden yardstick in the ground near the target for measuring the air. Keep only one tecter powered up during testing. This is also a good way to get a feel for the tecters "sweet spot" for coil sweep speed.
