Hello Robert,
My son and I have been geocaching for almost 3 years now and have just taken up metal detecting in the last few weeks. We use a Magellan Explorist 600 model, which is not being manufactured any more since Magellan came out with the new Triton line. I recently picked up another 600 on eBay for $120 new in the box and they originally were around $500. Stay away from Magellan's new Triton line. I never used one, but they get really bad reviews in the Groundspeak forum. Almost anything Garmin is good. I have used the Garmin Legend, Vista, and 60CSX. Garmin has the new Colorado line, but I hear pro and con about them. The 60CSX is really the most popular. You might go to geocaching.com and click on the forum link on the left had side of the home page to go to the Groundspeak forum and check it out. Ask your question there and you will get a lot of different answers.

Keep your metal detector in the car when you go Geocaching. You never know when a geocache may be in a good place for MD.
Good luck with geocaching. If you have more questions shoot me a PM here or email me from geocaching.com. My name there is Larry&Wesley. Wesley is my son and we usually go out geocaching together.
Just what is this Geo-Caching? It sounds like it's more hi-tech than a metal detector. Would someone explain how it
works? I would appreciate it very much.
Geo-Cacheing is like a treasure hunt where you are given the Latitude and Longitude of a "Cache".
With a decent hand held device that finds satalites orbiting the earth, you can see exactly where you are.
(Well, within 6 feet or so).
Folks hide containers with log books and simple cheap toys and such and publish the location on the internet at Geocaching.com .
The trick is to find the cache and log your find.
Took me 2 yrs. to find one in a big parking lot.
The sneaky thing is to hide it where it cannot be easily found. Is a challenge.
A fake bolt holding a road sign may be a cache.
Or an acorn in a pine tree.
Some of these people are evil about where they hide things ! LOL
Just a game to get you out of the house, but is fun.

It's a bit tricky but so much fun if you love being outdoors. I'm almost 40 and I just started. I took a slightly younger friend with me and she is hooked big time. She gets so mad when we can't locate something. This witch sees the cache from the car sometimes before we even get out to hunt.
