Does anyone have an idea on reattaching the back and not lose value?
Newt

Nice button, I would display as is, the more you do to it the less the value.

Awesome! Such a nice button. I agree that overcleaning might hurt the value, but you should look into aluminum jelly as a cleaner. I know buckle boy has used it a lot for GREAT results and I have tried it myself on several gilt buttons.

:o Now that's an AWESOME find, Newt! :o

Congrats on finding the spot! Hope ya find a bunch more of those buttons!!

Nana :)

Hiya, Newt!

Boy, when you pop back on Tnet, you make one heck of a nice post.

If there is remaining gilding on that button, you should check out my post in the cleaning and preservation section on using Aluminum Jelly. I've got lots of before/after photos, including a nice General Staff button I found last week.

That one should be a beauty.

Ace Hardware is your place. I think a bottle runs less than five bucks, and lasts forever.

Again, Fantastic find! In all my years of CW hunting I've never found a Confederate button...but I took some of my team on a trip to hunt some old spots of mine and a friend got a VA state seal back in May. Go figure... LOL.

It was nice to hunt with you at HB's earlier this year.

Buckles

Buckle, I've found 2 of these in 20+ years of detecting. I was really amazed when the 2nd one came out. BTW, I enjoyed the Hill Billy trip too.

Nice button.

I wouldn't clean it..I think I'd just put it in one of those plastic capsules with the foam in the bottom.
I have a 3 piece Kentucky button that the ring disenegrated (not the one shown) that I keep in the above mentioned fashion.

WTG!!

Very nice find!!

Sweet! Looks like there's a lot of gilt still on it! I found one with nearly 100% of the gilt once, and another with no gilt.

You mentioned reattatching the back. Is there a hole in the back where the loop came off? If so, you may consider having someone try to remove the "push" from the front of the button while there is a hole in the back to insert a rod to push it back out. Then get the loop reinstalled (if restoring it is what you want to do).

awesome job on the button! Looks like you found virgin civil war soil there! You may find a lot more civil war relics! :)
