"GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) — Park officials aren't digging treasure hunters at Gettysburg battlefield.

"Officials at Gettysburg National Military Park say someone apparently searching for buried relics dug 23 small holes in the park over the weekend. Now they're asking anyone with information about the holes to come forward.

"Digging on national park land can be an expensive hobby. It's punishable by fines of up to $100,000 and jail time. It's even illegal to bring a metal detector on to the grounds.

"Park Management Assistant Katie Lawhon tells WHTM-TV that Gettysburg saw a lot of visitors on Saturday, so it's possible the digging happened at night when the park was closed."

"Looters descended on Gettysburg National Military Park last weekend with metal detectors and dug 23 holes near Spangler's Spring in search of buckles, bullets, buttons and other artifacts from the three-day struggle in July 1863 that claimed 8,000 lives and changed the course of the Civil War.

Dosn't seem possible to me, unless a Newbie diging recent losses with a toy detector.

I am sure the staff at Getttysburg NMP is astute enough to differentiate a rodent hole from
a human-dug hole.

LOL I would hope so, but I also know how quick they are to make accusations,
& use intimidation on those hunting private properties next to the park

As you know, the NPS has no jurisdiction outside of park boundaries. If this intimidation actually occurred,
it should have been reported to the DOJ and the DOI.

I still wish they would have published a couple pics of the holes
so I could see if they were Dug or scratched open.

I have no doubt people detect there on occasion, as the article says,
some aren't even aware of the law. I just know on occasion I thought
someone was leaving holes open at sites I hunted, but later realized
they were from rodents. & they were small golf ball sized holes,
but didn't have clumps nearby from digging up the grass, just scratched fine ground
