GLOBAL WARMING

You'd still need to get the U238 to expose to the neutrons, and then refine the product. If we had this limitless free energy source, we wouldn't need the middle east and could just nuke them first

SomeGuy, its my understanding of "cold" fusion that you do not use radioactive materials, such as U238. In cold fusion, you unlock the nuclear energy that is in all matter (i.e. banana peels like in Back to the Future). That's why if it were possible, it would pose such an enormous risk. If you could unlock the energy stored in the atoms of say, an apple, that would be enough to vaporize a ciy block. Scary stuff.

No, cold fusion doesn't make a bomb. I was referring to your mention of plutonium. Pu is made by exposing U238 to neutrons. Even in cold fusion there would be a neutron shower, and one could design a breeder reactor to manufacture Pu. That's what I thought you were referring to, that it would make it cheap and easy to make plutonium for bombs...I mis-read your post. (Wasn't there a thread about how often many of us misread posts?)

I'm about ready for a little global warming, I've got some fishing to do!

I am trying to say maybe THE warming is natural an should not be worried about.THINK. THINK.if it ain"t broke, don"t fix it!!!
The Indians used to pack up and move when the buffalo and natural resources were all gone too! Entire South Florida, including the Everglades would be lost due to a "natural" cycle of ice melting and oceans rising. Do you realize how many people live in South Florida?

Yup! They are eventually going to be up to their butts in water, and there is not a damn thing any of them can do about it.. Well, maybe not! They can do what the Dutch do, and build Dykes, and windmill pumps .. Ooops make that 'Dikes" you don't have to build the other ones, they occur naturally ;D

We have beach renourishment to keep the hotels from caving into the ocean and to keep tourism alive. I spoke about the danger to low lying Florida on a different thread, several members became rude and nasty towards me, much had to be deleted and the whole thread moved to Politics. I am surprised this Global Warming topic has remained so civil and unpolitical.

The glaciers are melting is fact, but what is causing it, we just dont know. Just sit back and wait the answer may be forthcoming.

The Greenland glaciers are refreezing, so is Antarctica. My science teacher and I had a good debate about global warming. And the UN has the IPCC, intergovernmental panel on climate change. Half of its members are politicians, and they changed the original 1988 report, specifically the phrase "...and the extent of human activity on global warming cannot be precisely determined." It then said that we are the only factor in climate change. And the original global warming conference was planned in June during a heat wave. coincidence or added effect? Scientists are so concerned about climate 1000 years from now, but we still can't accurately predict tomorrow's weather. And the original figure given by the Colorado scientist predicting, in the '80s, how much the temperature would rise in a decade was overestimated by THREE HUNDRED PERCENT.

I dont know if this is really true so I will rephrase. We are losing more glaciers than we are gaining and the oceans are rising. We just dont fully understand this complicated interlinked ecosystem so many would prefer we wait and do nothing.

I'll get the references to a scientific paper.

I don't think anyone disputes that things 'are' warming up.. I know the winters, and the amount of snow we get now, is not anything like what we got when I was a kid in the 50's and 60's.. What I dispute is that it's mans fault.. I wonder how dedicated Al Gore would be if he 'wasn't' getting 125Gs for each 'global warming speech'

Personally? I think Al Gore, is the Michael Moore of Global warming, and he has the Hollywood left wing Oscar to prove it.. Now that Gun Control is a politically suicidal issue in American politics, you will notice, it's pretty well all the same groups and people on the global warming, reduce the CO2 band wagon... Gotta go where the money and grants are don't they.. You want government money for a project of some kind? just tell em your developing something to convert Grain, Water and CO2, into a burnable methane gas, and you'll have cheques flying in at you from all sides.. Just don't tell em your really just laying back, eating beans, and washing them down with beer. It's doesn't sound as Eco friendly..

You can make combustible methane at home by building a fermenter and feeding it with organic compost. The resulting methane can then be used to cook etc.

This just isn't possible. We all died 3 years ago. 1984, CBS ran special on global warming which said if nothing was done, we would all be dead in 20 years. NBC came right behind them, said the same thing.

In 1973, the same folks warned of the coming ice age.

I'm getting dizzy.

Well, I'm not dead yet, although I have tried to "push up Daiseys".. but she slapped me, and I gave up that idea P.D.Q ;D

Of course it can be done. You can run your car on it. The entire country of Brazil runs on it. Big oil will never allow it in the US. If they try to get much more than $3/gallon they may have a problem.

I think you're think of ethanol Big Cy. And they still use gasoline, plenty of it. Gasahol is a mix of ethanol and gasoline. Brazil just doesn't have to import oil anymore if they don't want.

Then again, if we could drill and refine here in the US, maybe we wouldn't have to either. We have the worlds largest shale oil reserves right here in the good ol USA, but we can't touch it, LOL!

Whatever its called, its made from vegetables, right?

I heard there are huge shale oil reserves in Colorado and we will be soon utilizing this resource. That is what I heard.

Sugarcane. Which they have tons of.

Turns out the burning of the fields is polluting the air down there. Also the fertilizer and bug killers they're using are polluting the rivers.

There are no easy answers.

A great discussion folks -- nice and civil. So many things I could comment on, but i'll just throw in one comment.

Al Gore and the internet:
One morning several years ago, I had coffee with Vint Serf. No really I did. He was asked about the comments Gore made regarding the net. He said that Gore was instrumental in the formation of the net ON THE POLITICAL SIDE as he (Vint) was on the technical side. In this instance Gore is guilty of a poor choice of words.

And now back to Global warming.....

I certainly hope so. Its been blocked many times in the past. Gas here is approaching $3.50 a gallon and still rising. Even if they put the project on a fast track, it'd be 5-10 years before we saw any relief from it. Oregon seems to lead in the enviromental movement and we have biodiesel stations all over the place. It runs 10 to 20 cents more than gas and is less efficient.
