9 3/8 inch flaked slate preform, for something, found 05/14/2011 in Shelby County Indiana.
many plow strikes, good mineralization.

Slate? Isn't that too soft for tool making? What did they make out of it?
 
Slate was used a lot for gorgets, bannerstones, and also axes/celts. It isn't a durable tool stone for sure but it was used often.
