I have been CRH cents, nickels and dimes for about 2 months now and have done pretty well but think I will give a go on halves. It seems like this is where most of the good finds come from. In looking at the dimes, I just look at rims and pull out the silvers and can go through a box in about 20 minutes this way. Do people look through halves the same way? Are there many key dates that are worth looking for that makes it worth the time to no just look for the silver rims?

Any other advice on hunting halves you can share would be great as I will be ordering my 1st box this week.

Thanks

Don't dump where you buy...etc. Read the 10 or commandments of CRHing. Sometimes people miss 40%ers by rim searching alone. Some do a sound check as well. Some check all coins for clips, rotation errors, double dies, proofs, as well as dates. One lucky searcher found a wrong planchet error recently, so it depends on what you're after. If it's just silver, rim searching saves time. Boxes of halves also vary depending on the particular supplier and area where you reside. Where I live, they're just not productive.

Good luck,

A lot of people just rim search halves for the silver ones. You can practice by rim searching a roll, then double check it by date searching until you get used to how 40% halves look. Sometimes they can be tricky to catch if they are worn or dirty.

Most people also look out for proofs (S mint marks) and NIFC (Not Intended For Circulation). NIFC years are 1987 and 2002-2010.

You can also check 1982, 1983, and 1990 halves for the 'No FG' error (the designer's initials FG are missing by the eagle). If you have a loupe, you can also search all 1972 and 1974-D halves for the rarer Double Die variation.

Be sure to read the Beginners Guide at the top of the forum if you haven't already, and ask questions!

Haha...I started the same way you did..i found a few silver nickels...some wheats..even a buffalo..i bought a box of halves in May..and it was a skunk box...so i sorta went back to cents and nickels..then i decided around August to try again..got my second ever box of halves..and it was a score..13 Franklins 11 90% Kennedys and 8 40% Kennedys..and 3 Gold plated BiCentennials..I was pretty much in shock...i even saved some for my girlfreind to open because it was so unbeliveable..about every other roll had one..and you could tell it was all from the same dump...Got another box right after that and it was a skunk box..just have to be at the right place at the right time

Its All LUCK!!

Good Luck with it..and dont give up...its just time
