Howdy all,
Todays post covers yesterdays hunt and todays. Yesterday I hunted a couple elementary schools to see if they were worth spending any time on. Like most small schools I pulled fair amounts of clad and trash. But did manage the mother of all junk rings. This thing is too cool to trash. So I have a medical skeleton on order who will wear it when he arrives. He will be the shops pimp named Bones. Complete with his pimp cup decked out in rhinestones. So since last night was a bust for any gold or silver we headed out on a mission tonight. We headed to a sports field that has produced well in the past. When we showed up we had the field to ourselves and were goin to town. After a while people were showing up and we were stuck in a small corner of the field. I was kinda pissy about it but oh well. I finally worked into a spot with a ton of surface coins which I started clearing with my propointer and screwdriver. Nickel after nickel and then I managed the ring. I was pokin and pokin at what I though was a nickel just under the surface but feeling nothing. So I leaned the screwdriver back and saw the ring on the end. I told Brandon my hunting buddy I had a ring and he asked if it was gold. I told him it hit in the nickel range so was either gold or trash. As soon as I snapped the pick I checked and sure enough it was 14k white gold. I guess it wasn't so bad being stuck in one spot after all. Sorry to be so long winded but this makes gold #20 for the year and I am still grinning. Thanks for looking and luck in the hunt.

That junk ring looks like one sammy davis jr would have wore back in the day, except his would have been real, just as outragious though...

#20, all I can say is great job!!!!

Are you guys having a good weather year with plenty of rain etc..? The reason I ask is that every piece of grass that you dig is green and pretty, my places have been looking like they have been carpet bombed, and really dry , which makes hard digging, even on good sports fields..

Keep em comming man..

Scott
Thanks Scott. Actually we have had a dry summer for the most part. But most of the fields are on timers for the sprinkler system. So the turf stays soft year round.

Did a quick online calculation and this is what it's worth if scrapped out . . .

August 6, 2010
6.6 Grams of 14 karat Gold = 147.86 USD

Price of Gold: 1194.60 USD an ounce.
14 karat: 58.33% purity.
6.6 Grams: 0.21219 ounces
Thanks Antiquarian. Those are the numbers everyone likes to see.

Thanks BBill. Yes I did find most of them at ball fields and sports arenas. They are good to me every season so I keep goin back. My favorites are usually attached to high schools.

Thanks JuJu, that's good to know. I never really hit ball fields before (unless they were really old), figuring they would just be mostly modern coins and lots of trash. Looks like you have had a lot of success. I guess I need to go try some modern ball fields now. :icon_thumright:

Good luck and have fun with it. During the summer I hunt the ball fields because the ground is diggable. During the winter I go after the oldies and deeper tones at older sites. Its kinda like an informal routine. HH
