Hello all... thought I would share this little story with you. My Grandfather passed 3 years ago and had passed some things down to us grandkids. One of the items that he had left for me was an old cigarette lighter. Why he passed it down, i wasnt so sure.. but it was cool looking anyway. So im messing around with it and notice the top wont close properly. Upon taking it apart i discovered stuffed inside was this small gold coin! Pretty neat, I was thrilled. I dont know anything about coins, but I thought I would share with some people that may know a little more than I do. Thanks for reading!

Cool story, thanks for sharing...and welcome to TN!

Looks to be a 1886-S $5 gold piece. 3,268,000 minted. $330 worth of gold by todays price.

Two nice mementos left by your Grandfather. :icon_thumright:

Welcome to T-Net. :hello:

The lighter is very cool, very vintage...... but it was mainly his way of secretly giving you that gold coin..... it was a delivery method! It was to keep the coin from sticking to the fingers of other family members. What a great inheritance!

Thanks Gramps!!! That's AWESOME!

That's pretty cool.

Probably a good luck piece , perhaps from his father. He stashed that beauty in a cool old L & M lighter :o " The Miracle Tip" :laughing7: gotta like that :headbang: :headbang: Congrats

I agree with everyone else...Very Cool! :headbang:

Now you have something to pass down to your kids or grandkids someday! :icon_thumright:

Welcome! :hello2:

Very very cool...i can just see him grinning away from somewhere as you pulled that out.

I have a 5d gold coin in the horn of my saddle. neat way to find it though.

My grandfather gave me something similar. It was all of his WWII medals and a book on the history of WWII published in 1945. It was given to him as a veteran. I have it all in safekeeping to pass to my son. (Along with all my own medals)

Very cool. But actually kind of risky if Gramps did remember it was there... It's a darn good thing you didn't sell the lighter or lose it. You were perhaps lucky to have even thought of taking it apart at all. But a happy conclusion in the end! :icon_thumleft:

Wow, I never thought to look inside of the old lighters. Guess what I will be doing from now on at garage sales and thrift shops!

Found some on the Net going for $35 in that condition :hello2: The GOLD coin is awesome, but the best thing is how your PawPaw made sure you got it!!!! :icon_thumright: :angel9: :angel5: :angel11:
