Went back & continued gridding the 17 acre field on my own. I was in a very modern trashy area & not an area that looked Roman but out popped 2 Silvers! This is why I grid promising fields because they could be anywhere. I had only done 2 hours & 45 minutes when the owner came & talked to me. I had thought the lines in the soil were a pre-plough mole to break up the ground because they were at a 30 degree angle to the normal crop direction. Turns out he had direct drilled into the stubble & used a lifting plough to create air for the roots of the oilseed rape. We had a chat & he was very understanding, I hate it when this happens, because we like to keep everyone happy. Thankfully no harm done but obiviously its my last day on the land until harvest.
The Roman Style Victorian Spelter Bust gave me a jaw dropping moment!

There is no much better condition to get a Denarius with! Thats an imperor you need an Aureus of... :headbang: I bet your hands were shaking for a moment when pulling the bust out of the dirt!

We are now on 14 Denarius this year which means we might make our 20 target, but what has been nice is we have had a few more quality ones than normal & yes I love these early type.

It rolled out of the mud as I flipped the mud out. I looked down & saw it, & thought 'its can't be!!!', picked it up & it wasn't lol (bearing in mind it was just after the 2 silvers which were within 10 minutes of each other)

What a crisp looking silver Cru, and liking the bust! Do you think the silver was clipped at one time or just an off flan type?

Its 3.08g, so on the heavy side & shows no signs of clipping, just an off-flan.

One of the reasons I like the 1st C AD Bust is because of how thick they are & the way the head is so raised.

Man oh man!! What a hunt.
Good luck on getting the 20!

What a thrill it must be to find 1900 yr old silver...can't imagine.

That Trajan is a real gem of a denarius, congrats man!

Gotta get me one of those silver…Congrats…That's what's great about this hobby, stuff can be hidden anywhere ….usually in trash of course...

Wow Cru, the relief on that bust is amazing. Hardly any wear at all and almost 2000 years old. Crazy!

Oh boy, you did it again! Finding that crazy Cru stuff. Congrats on another killer day. A lot of guys think successful hunters have all the luck but you're out there day after day working your arse off for those finds.

Keep 'em coming buddy!!

Steve

great finds CRU, I cant even fathom what it must feel like to dig such old old stuff, you guys are very lucky to have such amazing history over there, very good, productive hunt!!

You've really been on a nice roll man. Congrats on adding a couple more beauties to your already awesome collection of oldies.

It seems possible now, we had a slow start. Having said that I'm not sure 'where' they are going to come from. The crop rotation has not been in our favour for the best sites.
