I'm throwing this post together for all of the rookies that come to this thread looking for beginner information on gold prospecting all the time. I'll gather videos as I find them and then post them. Some of the videos are about panning, others about detecting, and some will explore various recovery methods. As well, some of them are just for the fun of seeing beautiful, sassy gold, and maybe the chance to explore a mine or two.

There's lots of gold panning videos out there, but if you're just starting out, this one has all the basics.

All the best,

Lanny

Here's another one on making a portable panning/sampling tub.

If you want to see someone with 40+years experience give tips and tricks on how to use a steel pan (a lot of the tips apply to plastic pans as well), and if you enjoy seeing big gold show up in the pan, this video's for you.

All the best,

Lanny

Interesting little Mom and Pop operation, using a highbanker for more rapid production; shows the use of a safety pan and a little wing-dam to create a low-pressure area for clean-up panning as well. Moreover, on their highbanker, they have an unorthodox removable spray bar (rather ingenious) and a full-length punch plate on the top sluice. (These guys are panning down a huge pan of super-heavies--probably not the best idea, but they at least panned it over a safety pan.) It's the full production, so fast-forward and hit the highlights--you'll see some pretty Australian gold.

All the best,

Lanny

Had to add this one--couldn't resist! I've only ever found a couple of nuggets on the surface, but this one would have given me a heart attack.

All the best,

Lanny

Little clean-up video with some nice gold.

All the best,

Lanny

Thanks! I remember seeing that classic a long time ago--dry panning and panning in the water, all with some great tips that came from solid experience earned in the school of hard knocks.

If anyone else has good panning videos to add, please do so.

All the best,

Lanny

Here's a classic--a bit dated, but the info is still solid.

All the best,

Lanny

I think a pan with a bigger bottom would have sped this up, but some good techniques anyway--not sure if he used a magnet previous to beginning his demo either.

All the best,

Lanny

No problem--glad you're enjoying them.

All the best,

Lanny

Booyah!

Well, you're on the right track if you're finding dust. If you can find and keep the flour, you'll be able to keep the bigger stuff when you come across it.

All the best,

Lanny

Clean-up video. Nice gold in the pan!

Bigger clean-up, but from a much bigger (mechanized) operation.

All the best,

Lanny
