Will a Lead mold accept the heat from molten gold?

Thats a great question....I have never tried.I have melted a lot of gold and a lot of lead.Gold Melts at 1850 degrees F.Lead is much lower....not sure what brass or Iron is??I would suspect one could cast gold balls in a mold?HMMMM

Will a Lead mold accept the heat from molten gold?

You going to make 24K Bullets or Sinkers ?

Hey Jeffro ....

I found one once very similar to what you are describing.. it looked like gold.. it was heavy like gold.. could see through it like it was made of a bunch of small particles... once I dropped it in acid.. the acid turned green and my unusual gold nugget was dissolved and gone...My nugget was copper.. not gold.. hope yours is all gold...

Good luck...

Klondike..

Well, that'll teach me to open my mouth before inspecting my samples, LOL! Turns out it's just a crystalline sample, as it does have a little quartz and host rock in it. My memory must be as shot as my body is. Just drug it out from the dustpile and checked it under the loupe. Way back when I was sure it was microfine particles all stuck together, but now I'm leaning more towards crystalline. Here's the best scan I could come up with.... it really needs to seen under more magnification to see the detail I'm describing, but maybe you all can make it out.

Don't tell me if it's not true. Really, don't tell me. Next we'll find out silver bullets are impossible and I want to keep some of my childhood fantasies alive. Hi Ho Silver! Away!!! :icon_sunny:

I seen a large specie from Mariposa that looks exactly like what you were describing....it looked like all powder gold in a conglomerate?I have never seen another like it?

Yes, that's pretty much what it looks like up close, very fine wires and powder all stuck in there. I've never seen another like it myself. Considering the area I found it in is known for its huge nuggets and not much fines at all. There was an old hardrock mine on the claim, that's what made me think it may have been from a retort. The smallest piece of placer I had found up there was 1/2 pennyweight. You could pan all day on that creek and swear there was no gold there if you were looking for colors in the pan, heheheh!

 Mariposa produces some of the craziest "odd",formations and types of gold I have ever seen

HEY GUYS,
I'VE BEEN THINKIN' ABOUT THE IDEA OF SHOOTING A MINI BALL INTO A CREEK BANK, AND
I DON'T WANT TO BE AT FAULT FOR SOMEONE LOSING A HALF OUNCE OF GOLD OR SO.
SO TRY IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. :evil5:
AS FOR ME I STILL DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FINES TO TRY IT WITH YET... :dontknow:
BUT, I DO HAVE A PIC OF THE FAKE....(ER TRAINING) NUGGETS.
YOU CAN SEE WHAT I MEANT ABOUT FOOLIN' A FEW OLD TIMERS. IT'S HARD TO GUESS AT THE
WEIGHT JUST LOOKIN' AT THEM IN YOUR HAND BUT THEY DO FEEL HEAVY.
THESE ARE FRAGMENTED .22 BULLETS, PAINTED METALIC GOLD. KIDS LOVE TO SEE THAT
THEY CAN PAN FOR GOLD AND KEEP THEM IN A PAN.

HEY POORHUNTER,

WHAT IS THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN? YOU WIND UP WITH A 24K GOLD PLATED
BULLET MOLD..... OR A BULLET MOLD WRAPPED AROUND A 24K GOLD BALL.

JUST THINK ABOUT ALL OF THE STORIES YOU COULD TELL ABOUT TRYING! :o
:coffee2: :coffee2:
MIKEL....

MIKEL....
I was just curious as to PROSPECTORMIKEL's Talking about shooting round balls into the creek bank, Then detect them out..

I remember A friend of mine melting brass with a torch, Then we poured it into a sinker casting mold.. Got brass sinkers. Would it hold up to gold? I have flake to try, Dunno if it will make anything... Hmm Any Ideas MIKEL

Melting points from Wikipedia
Lead 620
brass 1650
gold 1947

Poorhunter :coffee2:

POORHUNTER,
I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.
I DO REMEMBER READING A POST ON TN ABOUT SOMEONE USED A SKILLET TO MELT HIS GOLD
IN, USING A TORCH AND HE POSTED THAT HE NOW HAS A GOLD PLATED SKILLET.
IF NOBODY HERE KNOWS WHAT TO EXPECT, I WOULD CHECK WITH A JEWELER ABOUT IT.
I AM CURIOUS ABOUT IT BUT NOT CURIOUS ENOUGH TO ASK ANYONE TO TRY IT OUT.
AN OZ. OF FINES WEIGHS THE SAME AS AN OZ. OF NUGGETS. I WOULD HATE TO HEAR THAT
SOMEONE LOST ANY GOLD TRYING THIS AT $1,750+/OZ.
I DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO LOSE WITH MY LEAD (GOLDEN) NUGGETS.
IF ANYONE DOES TRY AND SUCCEED, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HOW THEY TURNED OUT. ::) :evil5:

ALL I CAN SAY IS ..........
........................................GOOD LUCK!! :dontknow: :icon_scratch:

MIKEL

Had to watch when I got up this morning.
LOL 3rd. dig.

Funny how the gold is always brighter
next door :D
No wonder they never hit the real paydirt.

Sort of like me detecting in the woods.
look ahead & see a relic laying,
walk over it's a tree Stump.
Look to the Left see a foundation
in the distance.
walk over, it's a shadow.
Look ahead see a stone wall.
walk over it's a Fallen Tree :D
all the while, the nice big silver Half
is buried beside my truck :laughing9:

What happened to them drilling? I thought they learned the lesson that you don't break ground until you check a core drill. Just back to Todd's " I know theres got to be gold there" BS.

I feel bad for Parker an dhope his grandfather is doing well.

I kept wondering why they didn't just dig a test hole with a track hoe before spending all the time it takes to strip the ground Sounds like the perma frost is thawed enough.

Good point! Seems to me the excavator could have gotten all the way to bedrock in a short time, and what made Todd think the nugget came from a different creek than where it was found. :dontknow:
