I can see the T.R at the bottom legend on the reverse, P.T.R is the Trier mint mark. Since I am less than 50 miles from Trier, you can send the coin to me, I'm sure the coin would feel better being closer to home, LOL! It really freaks me out that I can not find any Celtic or Roman relics and coins here, I must be cursed. Great find and HH, Mike

Wow! Congrats, it must feel great to have found such a rare coin and get a positive ID. Your whole collection of relics there is very nice, and that coin would be the centrepiece of any collection. can I ask what kind of detector you were using? And how deep was it?

Cheers,

DJ

Got an ID from the museum, its rare but not unpublished like I first thought. This is what they said:

The image is one of a half siliqua struck
in Trier most likely in AD 381. The coin is listed in RIC vol 9 at p.
34, no 109. Most of the coins with a known findspot of this type were
found in Britain. One of them is in the famous Oxne Hoard. It is not
a common coin. Would it be possible to know the parish where it was
found and the weight of it? It would be usefull to list it in the
Coin Register published in the British Numismatic Journal (BNJ).

So this will be the second coin to make the BNJ :)

After researching the Hoxne Hoard, I noticed that out of nearly 15000 coins found only 1 was the same as mine. I think only 4 have been recorded, therefore mine is about the 5. Rarer than the Museum made out!

Another question, as rare as that coin is, is it just between you and the farmer or do you have to turn it in? I know your laws very little and just curious?

By Law single gold or silver coins don't count unless found with other treasures. So its what ever agreement I have with the farmer. My agreement is 50/50 on Treasure Trove items (ie anything I hand in by Law) & in practice I keep the best 80% of finds & give the farmer 20% of the finds for his own collection. They are happy with this as they reconise that I am honest with them & put in a lot of effort finding them and plotting them on maps for them/us. Also I never sell anything & if I did (won't happen), I would have a moral obligation to rethink my agreements.
