The State of Texas has stepped up to the plate and placed a claim on the treasure as well. Let the greed begin.

Before it is all over the lawyers will own most of the treasure in the form of lawyers bills. Go figure.

Wold not suprise me at all if Spain also stepped up to the plate as well as half a dozen others.

Should be an interesting court case. May drag on for years.

The owners of the land should have quietly made a deal with the finder, then quietly dug the area themselves.

Mr. Smith scuttled off to consult a few experts and concluded the ship and its treasure was worth $3 billion.

It would be interesting to know how these experts concluded this. Presumably if this is on land today, it must not have been too deep 250 years ago.
If the ship was full of treasure why would it not have been salvaged at the time?
How did they place a value on the treasure so quickly? Based on what?

As previously stated, it's generally the lawyers who will really reap the treasure.

according to the story, it's located off the coast, which means, if it's navigable water, anyone can salvage it and the owners of the land are S.O.L.

At least for Mr. Smith it is.

Now, looks like local, state, maybe even federal officials will be trying to weasel in on the deal,
not to mention the original shipping company, the country of origin, and the insurance carrier.

Not sure, but I know groups, like insurance companies, keep track of
the cargo, the manifest, of such ships, and they can generally tell
what was on-board at the time it sank, and they can estimate the value
from both the cargo and the artifacts on the ship (cannons, historical items)
for present-day prices.

The landowners are idiots, and what's with that hostile attitude of theirs? The dude isn't too smart either, but they take the cake. Why wouldn't they let him dig? What's so special about their dirt? :O

Lets see, what should they do.....let him dig up some dirt and possibly find a sunken ship, or preserve the precious dirt and sit on it.

Is there some reason why they won't let him dig? Or are they just jerks?
