Spent a few hours at a friend's small yard. Not hitting much then got a few wheats (20s and 55d) Then a '45 GW. Went around to the front yard and dug my first SLQ! Turns out to be a 1927S!!! What is the best way to possibly have it sent in for grading and with whom?
Is it worth sending in?
Thanks for looking

Great coins, that SLQ is in amazing shape! HH

Killer finds! That slq is in great shape

that is a key date..great find and in great shape, congrats on digging a beauty!

Congrats on the great find! I collect that series and look forward to seeing them posted. That particular key-date (under 400K minted) is known to wear quickly- based on the photos, as long as you didn't scratch it while cleaning it off, I'd say it's a VF or better. About $300 or more value. PCGS or NGC are the 2 highest profile coin grading companies, and certified coins from those 2 tend to being more money when they are sold.

Good luck and continued sucess!!

Question is, do you want to grade it? If I found it, I probably would want to grade it. But knowing what I know now with how scratches effect grading and how just being in the dirt could have scratched it, It might come out with a grade low in our eyes saying it was improperly cleaned. I think I would take it to a couple of coin dealers and just tell them you found it in the attic and see what they think. I wouldn't tell them I cleaned it either. NGC looks at every coin under a microscope, micro scratches effect value.

I would want a find like that, slabbed and graded just for me and just so it was preserved and forever protected.
GREAT SAVE !

Wow lots of detail on that coin! Great find!

Beautiful coin. As mentioned above the grading companies look very closely for all and any major imperfections which include scratches. Dug coins tend to have a lot of them and each affects the overall grade a coin receives.

Thanks for all the info guys. I brought it home, put a dab of dishsoap in some boiling water and only had tobasically fan a q-tip over it while it was in the water. The stick never even touched it and everything came right off. The pics in the blue background are the result. Under close scrutiny I was kind of disappointed to see a consistent horizontal abrading across the obverse. Click on them and you may be able to see it on her legs. The reverse has a few scratches but no abrasions. I don't think I did that but either way it's there. I may send it in anyways to assuage my curiosity.

No matter what, it was such a thrill to just find my first SLQ, then to get home and see what it was....priceless:hello2:

oh man, you scored with that one. because of such a short mintage year span, SLQ's are a hard one to find to begin with, not to mention tough to find in that condition. it is beautiful. congrats!

I love seeing SLQ's in that high grade condition , the beaded rim on the obverse is such a nice sight ! Nice Find !.

What a gorgeous SLQ! I'd be hesitant to send it in, because under scrutiny/high magnification scuffing invisible to the naked eye might be detected and then you'd have a slab with "IMPROPERLY CLEANED" or "ENVIRONMENTALLY DAMAGED" glaring back at you every time the coin is brought out to be admired.

Anyway, that's the 2nd-lowest mintage of the series, right? Now you need to go out and get the 1916!

Great looking SLQ, congrats

Yes, it is there. I know it's not from any cleaning. I don't know if it was there when I dug or if I may have done it when I dug it. Regardless, it's a shame that it could have taken a coin that would easily fetch $2000 down to a coin that I'm sure will still fetch hundreds but really diminishes the value of a very nice coin. Kinda gut-wrenching.

I think I'm still going to get it slabbed anyways. Don't plan on selling it. Like TrebleHunter said, I want to just for my own enjoyment.

Nice SLQ very nice shape..

The coin grades about XF45, maybe even AU50, but it will likely come back "improperly cleaned", as others have noted. Still a killer find! Don't think I've ever seen one of these dug in high grade.

That is dead on exactly what I am thinking also...including the "improperly cleaned" or however they will classify the abrasion. As far as the quality minus the abrasion I would put it at au50 or better. Not gonna worry about it. Still gonna get it slabbed and will post a pic when I get it back.
