Got out today.........

Dug 5 hours today found lots of scrapers and misc plus pictured broken adena stemmed, not sure about the notched point , then a full adena stemmed(been reworked), and a bone awl. The hardstone was interesting having polish and dimples on 4 sides, anyone wanna take a guess at what that would be ?

Nicely done, glad to someone scoring some finds in that kind of weather. I found a piece similar to your dimpled hardstone find, it has usewear that is consistent with hammerstones. I'd check the ends for any heavy pecking use or damage. JMO

Thanks 37. Snow or no snow I had to get out there today, was planning to go Sat but something came up so I went today. The hardstone doesn't have any hammerstone use the dimpled areas are not polished but the other parts are, looks just like a celt where the polish is. In the picture its hard to see. If I had to guess, the only thing I could think would be some type of hardstone preform, be it celt or ect. I found another pc of hardstone today that was definately brought to site but it's not worked, its pretty smooth though and something that could have been pecked and ground but I guess they never got around to it. I also found an interesting pc of hematite that well hard to explain I'll post it tomarrow on this thread along with some other stuff I found today.

nice finds, man that sure does look like a pitted hammerstone, maybe a light duty hammer or possibly used for stretching or cleaning hides? that bone awl cool, ive never found one.

Maybe it's a pestle or grinding stone if the larger end has polish and it kind of looks flattened on that end. Here's the piece I was talking about, it has three sides with a dimple on each side.

Didn't have much luck with pictures today and I didn't really get time to go through and clean off everything I found yesterday either. Nothing spectacular but a lot of tools and scrapers one of my most productive days in a while. It was pretty dreary today so my pictures are blurry. clam shells, hematite celt in progress? It definately has one corner that you would see on a hematite celt but it has the rounded edge and if you place what would have broke off it would have been tear drop shaped? Also pictured is some type of knife it has polish where it looks like a thumb would rest and around the end area of "grip". and a big pc of hardstone that when first exposed before I dug it out I really thought I had something. I might have some pottery in my bucket and some really nice scrapers. If I find anything else in my bucket worth posting I'll throw it up here. I think I'm heading back out in the morning which is going to be here soon, so I might have something else to post by tomarrow if my luck goes as it did yesterday. And on the dimpled stone I was talking with a friend who said he had a rock like that which his son has now, and best I can conclude was a hide stretcher softener, but of course they could have rubbed it on many different things. But what really puzzles me is the dimples ? If it were a grinding/softenting etc pc what would be the purpose of the dimples. Grip? Lot of trouble for a grip? Thanks for the comments everyone.
