What's new

GPZ 7000 Successor, March 9th boys…. Apply for those second mortgages…

Who said I was straight? Hahahahaha too easy….

Ok..that didn't come out right. What I was trying to say was, that with your
level of experience hunting nuggets with Minelab gear, that I would trust
your results.

Yeesh....someday I've got to learn how to communicate...

You communicate just fine, I just have a twisted sense of humor. 😉

The operator-machine interface:

Previous discussion has covered factors that lead to success or failure in the GPZ 8000. We covered the subjects of the "operator" and the "machine". To do a deep dive into the operator-machine interface, we can reference the GPZ 8000 User Manual. Can we gain sufficient understanding from the User Manual?

For purposes of discussion, portions of the Minelab GPZ 8000 User manual follow.

Do you cross reference AI generated responses as it's like asking for mistakes 😅

Factory programs should be a very good start for most people.

Assembler,

I agree! Most manufacturers have defaults, presets, etc. to simplify the start-up. My hope is to share some of the collective knowledge of a more advanced detector like the GPZ 8000 for those that are looking for "more".

The GPZ 8000 is a big investment. Owners expect something more and they aren't always getting "more". I hope to explore the reason or reasons for the disparity in NOT getting more bang for the buck!

Pepperj.

I trust but verify! I have a very sensitive BS meter that leads me down the trail to sources that AI uses in replies to queries. The good news is - AI is getting better! AI is in "learn" mode. Training of the search algorithms is benefiting everyone. AI has very "smart" trainers that are making AI smarter with Less mistakes! Scary!

AI generated info is just for researching to verify and improve on. AI is good for looking for patterns at this time.

After Turning on the GPZ 8000:

For those NEW investor/operators, the "experience" often begins with the sensation of turning on the machine. Like an airplane, it's just an expensive, lifeless hunk of cold (but pretty) mass without any personality!

Have you ever started an airplane? 8-)

Better fasten your seat belt! Hold on the brakes, open the side window and yell, "Clear prop"!

With checklist in hand, you press the start button...

Ed. note: Having thousands of hours teaching people HOW to fly airplanes, I like to throw airplanes into the mix. :)

It's making noise, it lights up and you are looking at the controls! Reference the attached GPZ 8000 User Manual page 23. I have attached pages from the GPZ 8000 User Manual in PDF format for readers with a PC or Laptop so with you may switch between tabs as you go through the discussion. I was entertaining a virtual reality walk through but I hope this format works. Check out the controls, read the explanations. Personally, It looks simple and the layout is intuitive to the most casual observer.

I encourage owners/operators to please chime in with comments. The ultimate value in Forums like this is sharing. Let's look at settings.

GPZ 8000 default settings;

Default settings are in place for openers. The automatic and manual settings are discretionary and apply differently to every different situation. Personally, I see above average complexity that may require greater definition. Knowledge is power. Settings can be intimidating at first glance. Just like an airplane, looking at the display only costs time (no extra charge). Familiarity with the display is a reasonably easy transition for most users. Icons are reasonably intuitive. The operator-machine interface develops with familiarity and that comes with the learning experience. Owner/operators are once again encouraged to chime in with comments. Those readers having questions are of great value here. Intuition is in the eyes of the beholder. Things that are obvious to one reader/viewer may not be so obvious to another! ???

For most people the factory guideline settings will likely work very well for a given type of ground.

Yes, very true! Users are encouraged to grow their experience with settings outside the "norm" for the purpose of seeing what gets them on the gold that may be outside the norm.

Most people do not want a large / big learning curve just to metal detect.
With that being said perhaps to fine tune detecting in your given area some different programs could be useful at times.

Good point. I haven't seen a survey of what most people want in terms of learning curves. New technology requires new ways of thinking and learning how to properly apply the new technology. I would suggest that having the option to expand beyond the preset defaults offers possibilities for going deeper into higher levels of magnetized mineralization with greater success!

An operational deep dive off the high dive;

Exploration into new technology is like pressing into new places in the world. The experience is similar to walking out on the high dive. It involves a hard swallow, autonomic increases in our sensor systems! How much and when do we use "automatic" or "manual" controls? When and where can the machine evaluate the situation better than we can? Pilots flying an airplane in the clouds are encouraged to trust their instruments. You cannot see the ground! When do YOU switch on the "autopilot"? :hello:

Do you wait for the situation to get out of control? Do you know YOUR limits?

Over control... Then out of control!

Operators are like Pilots. Having trained instrument pilots in airplanes, I can share an observation that there is an instinct to "over correct". Over correction has the result seen in the JFK Junior accident. No, there's probably no crash in the operation of your GPZ 8000. There is a crash of sorts in terms of confidence in the machine. Our mind says, the machine is not responding and we crank in more correction. We crank in more correction and the machine goes off into left field. We have this sinking feeling that things are getting out of control. We are in a descending spiral. We crank the controls hard left and the machine makes a hard right!

This is the point where the operator-machine interface becomes broken. "Nope, it's not me!" syndrome kicks in. With a third past life in psychology and aerodynamics, I can share the most difficult part of human behavior is accepting we are "wrong". Being wrong can lead to success or failure. Your choice.

When SH dumped his GPZ 8000, he made a choice.

Stick around! There's more! :)

Operator Error?

Most operators are human. Give a Monkey a GPZ 8000 and a user manual!

Why do some humans behave like Monkeys? :hello:

One of the things that separates Monkeys from Humans is Human error! 🤔

We can't blame a Monkey for making an error while operating an airplane. Why are airplane accidents investigated and the result is most often "human error"? Why are metal detector operators never investigated and the cause of failure is always the machine? What's missing in the attached trouble-shooting info? ???

Stick around for the answer! :)

A rich kid throws down his machine;

In an earlier post on this thread, a well known GPZ 8000 owner SOLD his GPZ 8000 symbolizing the breaking point in the operator-machine interface.

Answer to the previous post (244): The missing error is "Human Error".

Metal detecting requires the right stuff. The right stuff is knowing the limits of your machine, knowing your personal limits and It helps to be willing to accept learning a new system. :)

For what it's worth;

Nebulous describes something hazy, vague, indistinct, or confused, often referring to ideas, plans, or memories that lack clear definition. It can also describe things that are cloudy or resemble a nebula in space. Synonyms include vague, hazy, unclear, and ambiguous, while antonyms include clear, distinct, definite, and precise.
AI Source: Dictionary.com

The scant information provided on the GPZ 8000 by Minelab combined with unmeasured, hazy, indistinct product reviews creates uncertainty and confusion in any effort to compare based on a specification, what the product is supposed to do and based on reviews, what it does or does not do.

Manufacturers purposely hedge on details of performance by making vague statements like deep response, difficult soil and tiny nuggets.

Nothing can be expected in terms of performance. The laws of physics prevail. Performance of any metal detector is limited by the target and the target environment - it always has been.

We can all agree that reduction of noise with ZVT theoretically improves Signal to Noise Ratio. Bipolar pulse switching has been around since day one of pulse induction. Receivers are designed to "listen" during the quiet period between pulses.

Ground balance in "difficult soils" has been around since day two. The trade-off is always the same. Balance out conductive (difficult) soils and you balance out equally conductive nuggets.

For the price, there is no measured bang for the buck. Until manufacturers set up valid third party testing facilities having verifiable, measurable, repeatable standards based on recognized NIST protocols, sheeple will sadly continue to blindly follow the blind.

A new detecting frontier is waiting.
