When you're using one of those ginormous coils, does the battery life suffer
due to the coil requiring additional transmit power?

Back in the bad ol' days, not at all. But now the coils are chipped and the detector can change operating parameters depending on the coil attached. So it's possible with the Z8k that the 18" burns more power than the 13", but probably not. And certainly not with the 5k or older. The funny thing is, if you are using a 24" coil on a 5k to look for deep honkers you probably would want a lower frequency/higher power TX mode, but you're not gonna get it.
