Grandson dug this up, really wants to know what his treasure is!!!

Last sunday my grandson dug this up in the yard, he had a great time and I think I got him hooked. He is wanting a detector bad for Xmas. I told him about this forum and that I would post this pictures of his find, so if anyone can chime in and give me a clue to what this is it would be very apreciated. Thanks for looking. JYD
