With a few exceptions (Mental Granny & probably Vibes) most boys had a thirst for the unknown. I know that I was always excited about exploring new places we found and the possible adventures we would have. For the longest time in my childhood, I was pretty limited in this quest living in a concrete jungle. We did have two areas for our expeditions, the Bronx zoo (park area) and the Botanical Gardens (A large and open park)
The zoo did have many areas that were off limit to the general public, so as we saw it, they were places unknown. Our best find were being able to access to Monkey Island in the winter when the Bronx river would freeze. Monkey Island was just that, an island where they would let the monkey's live outside during the summertime. You were able to view it from a distance and watch them play in the trees and laze around under the hot sun. The second place was some type of barn/storage building. This building became one of out best playgrounds. There were tons of bales of hay throughout and an overhead rafter system that you could run along. Playing tag in there was great. If you were trapped in the rafters, you could easily escape by jumping into the bales of hay. In some areas you were able to climb the bales and jump up to get hold of the rafters.
Botanical Gardens offered different type of excitement. In the winter they had some great hills for sleigh riding, in the summer you basically explored the wooded areas. Our greatest find in that park was the house owned by Jonas Bronck. He was a landholder with a high amount of acreage, his house was located near what was then known as Bronck's river, later to be called the Bronx river.
Although boarded up the was an opening that you could get to on the second floor, by climbing a tree and a little jump to the window.
