Once I hit eleven, maybe twelve, I had more leeway in my travels and was no longer confined to the Bronx for future explorations. My fiends and I now had our hearts set in exploring new worlds, the likes of New Jersey had to offer.
Since we had only a vague idea of where to head in NJ, we knew that we had to leave early in order to get back before dark. We were lucky if we had just over a dollar each for this journey, so money had to be spent wisely. Right from the start we were down $0.30 cents, the cost of a round-trip bus ride from our neighborhood to reach the George Washington Bridge. I can tell you the bridge crossing alone was a good journey at that age, stopping along the way to view the Hudson river and all its traffic. Along the walk NJ was looking good, as we marveled at the sight of the Palisades and knew that soon enough we would be in there somewhere.
Once across we decided at first to take the lower route and walk along the shoreline. We found an old abandoned hose that we explored for a while, but we didn't want to waste too much time playing there when there was so much else to see. While we had just started out and walked less than a mile, the ground didn't seem appealing to us, so we decided to turn around and go to the top side of the cliff. This was much more to our liking as we hiked through woods and eventually came across some kind of abandoned cloister garden. We had a great time exploring that area and playing, climbing over and around the ruins. We continued our hike for about another hour before we decided to turn around and head back.
I forgot to mention that I also found my first totally nude woman's magazine there. It was about a nudist colony and back in the 60's even Playboy didn't go as far as this magazine went. Before you ask, yup, I kept it
Not the most fascinating adventure, but still fun. It was still a good start of many more road trips to come. I slept like a baby that night too
