By the time I was in my early to mid 20's, my appreciation for the outdoors never faltered. I was living in a near area and most of my friends of the past were already deceased, or moved away. The newer crowd I was with were not into hiking, or camping and just like hanging around kicking back with a few beers. That was OK for me on some days, but I preferred seeing new places and possible challenges.
When I wanted to getaway, I would pack a knapsack with some change of clothes, grab some canned goods, sleeping bag and toss it in the car for Friday night. That Friday, I would leave from work a bit early and take a drive to the Adirondack Mountains, park my car and hike until it started getting dark and make camp there for the night. The next day I would back up and hike again until just past mid afternoon and start the process all over again. The following day I would just hike back to the car to go home.
Funny, I never saw anything remotely interesting, but it was just so peaceful being outdoors. Sleeping under the stars in the fresh air was just another bonus.
