Today was quite the day so if you want to get right into it, skip to the next paragraph. Here's what I'm swinging and the settings. Equinox 800 in Field 2. EMI cancel, no ground balance, 50 tones, response time 4 and zero discrimination. Garrett carrot, max sensitivity.

I'm out with a group that consists of members from a couple different clubs in the Puget Sound area. We are spread out over a large site with ad hoc groups forming as people meander around.

After about an hour and a half of digging clad and junk, I look up and realize it's myself and two others left working this particular area. The rest have moved on. Not long after that one of the other two near me tells me she's going back to the car. We're down to two.

It's about this time when I'm thinking about moving to another area myself when another signal caught my ear. it sounded good and the numbers indicated it was right around the quarter range. Dig it!

At this point I let out a victory yelp and the guy left looks up and gets excited about my find. We celebrate for a few moments and then it’s back to business. Fill in the hole, one last check to make sure it’s empty and I’m back on the hunt.

Not 10 minutes later I get another signal much like the one mentioned above. Dig it!

It’s a shame this one was damaged so badly. I’m not sure if all of it was me, but I suspect most of it was. Despite the scuffs, I was thrilled with the find. This event marked my first hunt with multiple silver coins found. What a milestone! Doing so with quarters absolutely blew me away.

At this point I’m over the moon internally and externally I’m going about trying to be as thorough as I can in the area. As I’m doing this, this thought about whisper tones pops into my head. I started thinking about a conversation I heard between two detectorists discussing tones you could hear from the machine but wouldn’t produce a target ID.

I had gone after these kinds of tones before but found them especially challenging to locate and dig to. Especially when they were deep which they always seem to be. This time though, I had a different shovel with a longer blade, and I was open to the idea of trying out some whisper tones here. I kept searching.

Then I heard something faint. It sounded good, but quiet. No target ID. Hm. I passed my coil back over the area, there it was and again, no ID. Hmm, this is getting interesting. I proceeded to continue scanning from different angles and at one point, I saw a 33 and 34 briefly pop up on screen with many arrows next to it.

At this point I’m ready to dig a pit that would make the depositors at Oak Island blush. I do my best to figure out where the center of this thing is and dig a 5-6” radius around it. I’m getting the most out of this new shovel and not long after a pretty decent plug pops out of the ground.

Scan the plug, nothing. Scan the hole, it’s still in there. Got in there with my pinpointer and the only place I could get a signal was at the bottom of the hole in one quadrant. I’m using the carrot here and the signal I was getting told me I still had some distance between it and the target. I used my shovel to take a chunk out of the sidewall that I thought was well behind the target. It turned out to be just above it and when I removed the chunk I saw something shiny below.

I was floored. Yes, there is a slight ding but what am I going to do? This is my first triple silver day ever and I just made it with a half. Holy cow I’m on a roll!

After that I spent another hour hunting then decided to head back to the car for lunch.

Once back to the car, I took a picture of my finds and sent it to another member of the group who had gone to a different area to hunt. There were some other guys there who were also back eating. We chatted for a bit, showed finds and all that. They were interested in where I had been.

That was pretty much the same story with the rest of the guys. A couple other coins had turned up, but folks were pretty keen to see where I had been. So we went there. Not 10 minutes after getting back, I get another stand out signal. I call one of the guys over and we start taking turns checking it and discuss what it might be. At one point I said it sounded like another half. He thought it was closer to a quarter. We’re splitting hairs here but this is part of the finer nuance I’m trying to get my ear tuned to.

Eventually I end up digging this thing. The signal was in the plug and as I narrowed in on it with the carrot I started to lose it. I could see another large silver and this one had a thin edge. All I could say was it’s thin and I think it’s old.

For this area 1909 is plenty old in my book. I was stunned and so was the crowd that soon formed. Sure, this thing had seen better days, but nobody and I mean nobody expected this to turn up here. One person said this was the first barber era coin they knew of found here. The prevailing thought was this area hadn’t been used until after the 1930’s. If only these things could tell their tales.

The best part of this is several more silvers were found amongst the group from this area including 3 rosies, 1 merc dime, 1 washington quarter and 1 walking liberty half. That half was the last silver of the day and what a cap to an outstanding hunt.

The awe of what happened today is still setting in on me. There will be stories told from this hunt for I don’t know how long. A round up photo of my finds is below and just for kicks I took a photo of the Franklin half edge compared to the barber so you can see the difference I saw.

Hope you Enjoyed this read and thank you for your time.

PS - I see the photos aren't rotated properly. I'll fix that in the morning after I've had some sleep.

Wow, nice Barber half! Was probably lost several decades after being minted which explains how it managed to end up in a place used much more recently on the timeline. Friend of mine's mom owned a store out west and was still getting large cents being spent by some of the old timers as late as the 1950's.

Well done on the day of silvers.

Nice haul! Bet you were excited when that dollar popped Out!

Nice multi - silver day. Halfs are hard to come by, so scoring two, including a Barber, is awesome. Congrats!

Congrats on the big silvers! :occasion14:

Thank you very much and you nailed my sentiments exactly. Especially with how it went down getting the second one at the end while all those other silvers turned up. What a hunt!
