Good afternoon, everyone. I’m a 16 year old junior, and I’ve bought lots of vintage dress clothes and some cufflinks off of eBay. I purchased this pair a few days ago. I’m quite curious if the stone is semi-precious or of quality, and if it was worth the $24 price tag. Either way, they’re visually quite nice, but I have no clue as to the quality of these links as there’s no insignia or signature. My Garrett metal detector said it was somewhere between iron and gold, with a weak readout. Worst case scenario is they’re a cheap pair manufactured in China out of cheaply plated metal and some fake gemstone. I’ll be glad to provide any more photos if necessary. Thank you all for your time and input.
Respectfully,
Brian

Possibly gold-plated, but it's doubtful they are made of gold. Gold will be stamped with the karat. ie: 10K, 14K etc. with 24K having the most gold content. Since the setting is gold plated at best, it's unlikely the stone is of much value. However I am no expert on either gold or stones. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along shortly.

And welcome!

It looks like gold plated base metal and I wouldn't be surprised that stone isn't just a polymer plastic made to look like maybe malachite with little flakes of gold leaf inside. It's a really inexpensive cufflink from what I'm seeing. I've bought a few cufflinks in my time and I only buy what's made of precious metals with enameling or real stones and pearls. Best pair I bought for $35.00 was made in France of white 18k gold, black onyx and had small rubies. They were made by a jewelrer with the name Ghiso. I made a nice chunk of change off that pair of cufflinks. I haven't sold any cufflinks in awhile now and my collection is starting getting up there as I keep on picking and not selling. In my opinion, Brian don't waist another dime on cufflinks like this. Keep searching for nothing but the good stuff, not on eBay, but pawn shops, thrift stores, flea markets and antique shops and malls. Ebay is where you want to sell the good stuff or on other online sites.

I agree with tamrock. The lack of a maker’s mark and carat designation are not favorable. If you are investing, look for quality items at discount prices. Be careful out there.

Gentlemen, I greatly appreciate your input. It’s good to know the story behind these cufflinks. Tamrock, it certainly makes sense that the proper places to find fine jewelry—such as cufflinks—are not where the prying eyes of knowledgeable web perusers lie. I see that I should be more picky about what I select. It’s all about the virtue of patience, for a 16 year old young man such as I!

In the future, I’ll hone in on the sources you mentioned and look for pieces with proper identification. Thank you again for your help and consideration.

Respectfully,
Brian
