Grl Friend's barn find!!

My grlf and I were poking around an abandoned barn . She found this Folksy carving thing on the floor under some boards . We looked up St. Walston - he is the Patron Saint of Farmers .He died back in 1016 . The back is dated 1944 .
We put it on the mantle over the fireplace , looks nice there !

That is a nice find!!!!

I did a little search on Carlotta (the name on the back). Not knowing if TABER is her married or maiden name...I found a Carlotta L. Taber on the 1910 Mass Census and then another on the SSDI....now the SSDI, that could either be her married name or maiden name....but the birth year is about the same as the census...could it be the same person and could this be the person etched on the back of your find????

Re: Grl Friend's barn find!!

Mojjax, that is an incredible find. :o :o

Folk art is very collectible. Yours is great since it has the artist's name and the date carved into it. Art like that can sell for hundreds of dollars. That is a prized find. :)

Could you tell me how big it is? It looks pretty large.

Ronandann , thanks for the fantastic research !

Re: Grl Friend's barn find!!

I was thinking the same thing.
I know alot of empty buildings I could kick the doors in too. LOL be it the state or GOV or someone else someone owns that property. If I owned that and lived in another state I would be PO'ed.

I'm sorry, I'm feeling guilty and I don't have anything to do with this. What happened to ethics and returning lost rings and all that? If the land owner said keep it then Hot Damn. My stance until proven otherwise: It's theft.

Re: Grl Friend's barn find!!

I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. It's one thing to kick in a door and take something out of someplace with "no trespassing signs" but if doors are swinging open and it's all overgrown, uncared for, I don't see a problem with taking it. If you wouldn't have someone else probably would. I know some of you will probably think I have no respect for other people's property but that is not the case. But think what you want.

Nice find by the way!!

Re: Grl Friend's barn find!!

One problem: Abandoned barn?
[/quote]

No problem , It's on our property .
We got this place last year . 100 acres - 2 abandoned houses , decrepid barn , several out buildings , 4 cellar holes , 7 stone-lined wells , a main house (where we live) ,a guest house (we rent it out to help pay property tax) , pet cemetary , human cemetary , 3 bottle dumps, remains of a grass tennis court . Keeps us with plenty of stuff to do . Except for the guest house , it had all been abandoned for many years .

Re: Grl Friend's barn find!!

Very nice find. Sounds like you have a lot of place to go treasure hunting...right in your own back yard :D. Congrats on the super find.

Re: Grl Friend's barn find!!

That is way too cool Mojjax.....I keep telling hubby we need to buy a place like that!!! And I am serious!!! I want out of this suburb, that is going for the city look!!!

So, I would guess either ... that Carlotta lived on your property at one time....or someone was given or bought that piece from her. That property sounds like it holds alot of history, not just in treasure hunting...but ppl wise...I'd research it....GOOD LUCK and hope you find many more wonderful treasures!

Re: Grl Friend's barn find!!

Question Mojjax.....are ya'll planning on fixing up those buildings or tear them down? If you could, I would see about trying to fix them up to period time and whatever items you find in and around that particular bldg....use for decoration within.....I think that would be so cool. Love the pics!!!!!!!!

Re: Grl Friend's barn find!!

Thats one great find. And best of all you can trace its past.

I know this is an old post , but I found a lot more information .
A lady from Georgia saw this post and emailed me .
She was doing research on the Farmerettes - they were the ''Rosie The Riveters" of farming during WW1 . They grew crops to send to our men fighting over seas . Carlotta was one of them . She told me she had a Tea House north of Damariscotta back in the 40's & 50's .
The Wayside Tea Room House is just a half mile down the road from us . I talked to Patty , the present owner at a Xmas party last year last year - she new Carlotta , and bought the Tea House from her .

Patty is on her way back to Maine now , she winters in California . Her Tea House is a antique shop .A car crashed into the Tea Room this morning . Car Hits Tea Room in Nobleboro, Driver Taken to Hospital - Lincoln County News - Newcastle, ME
