I was thinking door handle but it's only 5" long and about 3/4" wide.
Looks blacksmith made.

Found way back in the woods about 5" down
No homesites near that i can find on any old maps

Can you take more pictures with an item we can use to compare its size (Like a quarter next to it )

Not sure about recessed screws, but my first guess is a piece of a tillage instrument. Perhaps off a cultivator.
This was my first thought as well, maybe a part from an old antique plow? :icon_scratch:

Not in an area that was farmed . From what I have researched it's been timber / hunting land for last 150+ years so maybe something associated with lumber equipment.
somewhere near this area there was a large union campsite
