It was about a foot deep. I've found coins thru the 1800s in this area. There is a hole drilled beside the screw where the end of the spring sits.

The shape and set screw made me think "curtain rod" for some reason. But that's just a guess...

If I had to pick something I would say sewing machine. Don't know why, its just the first thing that popped into my head. I have definitely seen it before.

I can't find a good image but it reminds me of part of an old beam compass used to scribe circles for things like cutting tabletops.

well, the ID comes down to the size and dimensions, I missed the dime - sorry
Based on the Dime placed next to the item, its pretty small
